Harvest Moon
Neil Young Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Come a little bit closer
Hear what I have to say
Just like children sleepin'
We could dream this night away

But there's a full moon risin'
Let's go dancin' in the light
We know where the music's playin'
Let's go out and feel the night

Because I'm still in love with you
I want to see you dance again
Because I'm still in love with you
On this harvest moon

When we were strangers
I watched you from afar
When we were lovers
I loved you with all my heart

But now it's gettin' late
And the moon is climbin' high
I want to celebrate
See it shinin' in your eye

Because I'm still in love with you
I want to see you dance again
Because I'm still in love with you
On this harvest moon

Because I'm still in love with you
I want to see you dance again

Because I'm still in love with you
On this harvest moon

Overall Meaning

In Neil Young's song Harvest Moon, the lyrics speak to the enduring love between two people who have grown together over time. The singer starts by asking his lover to come closer so they can share this moment and dream away the night like children. They both know that the full moon is rising, and they feel the pull to go out and dance in the light. The singer confesses that he's still in love with his lover and wants to see her dance again.

The song then takes us on a journey through their shared history. They went from being strangers to lovers, and the singer watched his lover from afar until they finally fell in love. Now, as the night grows late and the moon climbs higher, he wants to celebrate their love and see it shining in her eyes as they dance together under the harvest moon.

The lyrics to Harvest Moon are a beautiful tribute to enduring love and the importance of cherishing the moments we have together. The song became a hit when it was released in 1992, and it continues to be a beloved track by Neil Young fans to this day.

. . . There is just s o v e r y m u c h
... that we know so very little about .
And then in our depths of both grief
and ' n o t - k n o w I n g ' . . . this
c o m e s - t o p a s s , meant in it's
most literal sense ... it is not a coincidence - they do not exist .
She IS alive and well - for the both of you
dear fellows listed above - and all others
who know of such days and nights .
They know of our deepest sorrows and will
send ' s I g n s ' to reassure us that
' a l l i s w e l l ' .
No , I've never heard a Neil Young song
being played in a store or supermarket,
except just the once and that is one hell of a ratio .
It was ' H a r v e s t M o o n ' .

Not sure if any one’s gonna read this, but I’m 15 and started highschool recently and I have terrible anxiety. I listen to this song almost everynight before school and it calms me down so much. It’s like a routine now I always look forward to listening to this. Thanks neil young for this song 🧡 Edit: hey guys, I’m 16 now getting ready to be a sophomore. In the hallway between classes, stand off to the side for a moment or two. Look for someone with their head down, avoiding eye contact and just putting one foot in front of the other. See if you can find them after that class. Approach quietly and say to them "Hello, my name is Ginny. I feel the same way." See what happens. I have found that if I can connect/help someone else, my own anxiety quiets down a bit. Peace.
