Track 1
Neil Young / Johnny Depp Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Now that you found yourself losing your mind
Are you here again?
Finding that what you once thought was real
Is gone, and changing?

Now that you made yourself love me
Do you think I can change it in a day?
How can I place you above me?
Am I lying to you when I say
That I believe in you
I believe in you.

Coming to you at night I see my questions
I feel my doubts
Wishing that maybe in a year or two
We could laugh and let it all out

Now that you made yourself love me
Do you think I can change it in a day?
How can I place you above me?
Am I lying to you when I say

That I believe in you
I believe in you.

Overall Meaning

The opening lyrics of Neil Young and Johnny Depp's "Track 1" delve deep into the psyche of a person who is questioning their reality and finding that what they once believed to be real is now changing. The singer is observing someone who has lost their mind, and is wondering if they are back again. The tone is melancholic and introspective. It's a question that we all ask about ourselves sometimes – are we losing our grip on reality? And what are the consequences of that loss?

The second verse begins with the singer wondering whether they can change someone else's love for them in just one day. This statement is loaded with meaning – it suggests that the singer is unsure of their own feelings about the person, and is questioning whether they are good enough for them. The singer is being self-reflective, which contrasts with the first verse when they were observing someone else. The chorus repeats the phrase "I believe in you" twice, suggesting that the singer is trying to convince themselves to stay committed to this person, even though they have doubts.

The final verse imagines a future where the doubts have dissipated, and the couple can "laugh and let it all out" in a year or two. It's a hopeful vision, but tempered with the knowledge that it might not happen. "Track 1" is an introspective journey that explores the complexities of love and doubt. It's a gentle, stripped-back song that relies on the power of its lyrics to convey its message.

I love this film. Jim Jarmusch made a masterpiece...thank you Jim. Johnny Depp was good in this film and I became a fan here, (only to give up on him later). He was cast perfectly for this role. He is also quite a good guitar player. Which leads me to the soundtrack. Some of the most intense and emotional guitar playing ever. Tender acoustic coupled with the ferocity of Neil's Tweed Deluxe melting from his playing. Gary Farmer is the movie....He is wonderful, (Iggy Pop and Billy Bob T are really good additions, too). Robert Mitchum is perfect. I love the Soundtrack so much. Just a great example of story, cinematography, soundtrack. One of my favorites of all time.
