All Along the Watchtower
Neil Young & Crazy Horse Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

"There must be some way out of here," said the joker to the thief,
"There's too much confusion, I can't get no relief.
Businessmen, they drink my wine, plowmen dig my earth,
None of them along the line know what any of it is worth."

"No reason to get excited," the thief, he kindly spoke,
"There are many here among us who feel that life is but a joke.
But you and I, we've been through that, and this is not our fate,
So let us not talk falsely now, the hour is getting late."

All along the watchtower, princes kept the view
While all the women came and went, barefoot servants, too.

Outside in the distance a wildcat did growl,
Two riders were approaching, the wind began to howl.

Overall Meaning

The song All Along the Watchtower by Neil Young & Crazy Horse is actually a cover of the original song written by legendary singer-songwriter Bob Dylan, but Neil Young brought his own unique sound to the song, adding his personal touch to it. The song has a deep meaning, and it's all about seeking solutions to problems in the midst of confusion and chaos.

The starting lines "There must be some way out of here," said the joker to the thief, "There's too much confusion, I can't get no relief" refer to the feeling of helplessness and despair, where the joker and the thief are looking for a way out of their current situation. The thief tries to calm the joker down by stating, "there are many here among us who feel that life is but a joke," but the joker insists that they keep looking for a way out because he cannot find any relief from the chaos that surrounds them.

The lines, "All along the watchtower, princes kept the view, while all the women came and went, barefoot servants too," signify the powerful people in society, who keep a watch over everything, while others come and go, oblivious to their rulers. The song's final lines are "Two riders were approaching, the wind began to howl," which depicts that something significant is about to happen, but what it is, we do not know.

Stumbled across this purely by accident and thought I'd give it a listen.......there are no words that can do this justice. Absolutely first class and Neil Young who I have always been a massive fan of just nails this. Fantastic musicianship throughout and everyone's input is heard loud and clear but anyone who down voted this needs immediate psychiatric assessment. Marvellous rendition and outstanding effort from all.

Conor Kennedy
