Carmichael
Neil Young & Crazy Horse Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Silk scarf and a napkin hidden in a drawer
Two hundred bucks in an envelope labeled Lenore

"Maybe she shouldn't see this
She should never know"
Said the widow's best friend Ann
"I'll just take it and go
I'll give it her the money later
Say it was in his shoe
That way she'll never find out
That'll do"

"Carmichael was a credit to the force
In everything he did
It's like we've got a big hole in our side
Where he fit
If any of you officers would like to say a word
Now would be the time to be heard"
"Thank you chief, I sure would
He was a partner of mine
He was always very careful
Played it straight down the line"

One by one the officers spoke
And the service drew to a close
He had no living relatives but his wife-who never showed
She just couldn't face the men--they all understood
They got in their cars and drove home
As directly as they could

"Carmichael, you asshole!"
The new widow sobbed beneath her vale
"Shot down in the line of duty
Is this how justice never fails?
I wish that things were better
When we said goodbye today
But we had our share of good times though along the way

Remember 'Hey mister Las Vegas-You used to be so cool!'?
We met Wayne Newton down on Pebble Beach and you acted like a fool
But we both just couldn't stop laughing-it seemed so funny to us
We left our luggage back in the room and almost missed the bus
That was a great vacation--maybe the best of all
But goddamn it, Carmichael, you're dead now and I'm talking to the wall"

The force got back to normal

Carmichael was replaced
For one year nobody parked a car in Carmichael's space

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Neil Young & Crazy Horse's song "Carmichael" narrate the aftermath of a police officer's death. The song opens up with the widow's friend Ann sneaking into her house to retrieve an envelope full of cash and a silk scarf and napkin. The widow shouldn't know about this, but Ann plans on giving her the money later and lie about its origin. The following lines describe Carmichael's funeral, which is attended by his fellow officers. They all describe how much of a great cop he was and how he played it straight down the line. The widow doesn't show up, but the officers understand that she can't face them.

The song's chorus presents the widow talking to the wall and screaming at Carmichael. She wishes things had been better when they said goodbye that day, but they had good times, too. They went on a great vacation when they left their luggage back in the room and almost missed the bus. But now Carmichael is dead, and she's talking to the wall. The last verse is a tribute to Carmichael as someone takes his parking spot at the police department one year later.

Neil Young wrote this song for Jim Carmichael, a police officer from California who spent over 20 years with the San Francisco Police Department. Jim tragically died when he was shot in the line of duty on September 11, 1986.

Jim Carmichael was also a close friend of the members of Neil Young's band Crazy Horse. When they found out about his death, they decided to write a song in his memory.

During the filming of the video for Carmichael, Neil Young wore a Jim Carmichael San Francisco Police Department bike shirt.

The song also appeared on an episode of Miami Vice in 1987.

Crazy Horse performed this song on a US Tour in 1987, and it has been played live several times since.

On the day Jim Carmichael was killed, Neil Young and Crazy Horse delayed the rehearsal of their upcoming album for a while, as they were stunned and saddened by the news.

The original releases of the album "Life" did not contain the song Carmichael. It was later added to the remastered version.

The opening riff of the song is based on the children's song "The Farmer in the Dell."

Carmichael became the first-ever live premiere on a nationally televised Sunday Night Football game, almost 25 years after its release.

The official video for Carmichael premiered on MTV on September 11, 1987.
