Clementine
Neil Young & Crazy Horse Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In a cavern, in a canyon,
Excavating for a mine
Dwelt a miner forty niner,
And his daughter Clementine

Light she was and like a fairy,
And her shoes were number nine,
Herring boxes, without topses,
Sandals were for Clementine.

Clementine! Clementine!
Oh my darling, Clementine!

Drove she ducklings to the water
Every morn just at nine,
Hit her foot against a splinter,
Fell into the foaming brine.

Ruby lips above the water,
Blowing bubbles, soft and fine,
But, alas, I was no swimmer,
So I lost my Clementine.

Clementine! Clementine!
Oh my darling, Clementine!

And the minor forty niner
Soon began to peak and pine
Thought he oughta join his daughter
Now he's left with Clementine

In my dreams she still upon me
Broken garments soaked in brine
Though in life I used to hug her,
In death I draw the line

Clementine! Clementine!
Oh my darling, Clementine!
(Oh my darling, oh my darling)

How I missed her! How I missed her,
How I missed my Clementine,
So I kissed her little sister,
And I forgot my Clementine.

Clementine! Clementine!
Oh my darling, Clementine!
(Oh my darling, oh my darling)

Clementine! Clementine!
You are lost and gone, Clementine!
Clementine

Clementine! Clementine!
Oh my darling, Clementine!
(Oh my darling, oh my darling)

Clementine! Clementine!
You are lost and gone, Clementine!

Clementine!

Overall Meaning

Neil Young & Crazy Horse's song "Clementine" tells the story of a miner named forty-niner and his daughter Clementine. She had light and fairy-like qualities and wore shoes that were 9 in size. Her shoes were made of herring boxes and didn't have any tops. She used to drive ducklings to water every morning at 9 and accidentally fell into the water while hitting her foot against a splinter. Despite her ruby lips above the water, the singer wasn't able to save her and so she drowned. Forty niner soon became stricken with grief and decided that he should join his daughter in death, leaving Clementine behind.

Even in death, the singer still thinks of Clementine and in his dreams, she is still upon him with her broken garments soaked in brine. However, he draws the line and states that he won't hug her in death. He then confesses that he misses her so much and kissed her little sister and forgot about Clementine. The song is a mix of sadness and guilt, and its melody resonates with the melancholy of the lyrics.

To the haters that do not get this album, you must understand that these are songs from an age of innocence when our great nations were still under construction. In today's fast paced world, these traditional songs were on the abyss of becoming lost forever on the current generation. Neil young aims to bring some life back to the songs that our grandparents grew up singing as children!

Most of todays 'rock bands' would benefit from locking themselves in a listening chamber with this album on repeat. The emotion, the camaraderie, the community that Neil and Crazy Horse bring to this album(like all their albums) is so inspiring. I love the imperfections, the honesty, the places you go when you listen. Thanks Neil and Crazy Horse for another gem!

@SkitKorek

CRAZY GOOD! When I first saw the track listing for "Americana", I thought that this could be a disaster. Then I bought the album and was inspired from the first to the last note. Only Neil could take this group of traditional songs and pull the true soul out of every one. I'm so inspired that I'm going camping up in the mountains this weekend. A perfect spot I know near Banff, Alberta where I can camp without anybody else within 10 miles. While, almost alone...Neil Young, Pocohantas and me.
