Crazy Horse is best known for its long association with Young, despite having released five albums of its own over a 19-year span. It has been co-credited with Young as Neil Young and Crazy Horse on 15 albums, "Americana" and "Psychedelic Pill" from 2012 being the latest.
The band recorded a concept album entitled "Greendale" (2003) that told the story using metaphors of murder and crime to represent the destruction of a small town community. The final song "Be The Rain" is one of Neil's classic epics, pleading for the world to be like the rain -- recycle and conserve to save our planet.
Discography: the studio albums "Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere" (1969), "Zuma" (1975), "Rust Never Sleeps" (1979), "Re-ac-tor" (1981), "Life" (1987), "Ragged Glory" (1990), "Sleeps With Angels" (1994), "Broken Arrow" (1996), Greendale (2003), "Americana" (2012), Psychedelic Pill (2012) and live albums "Live Rust" (1979), "Weld" (1991), "Year of the Horse" (1997), "Live at the Fillmore East" (2006)
Speakin' Out
Neil Young & Crazy Horse Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The plot was groovy, it was out of sight.
I sat with my popcorn, out lookin' for good times
Lost in the cartoon, I grabbed the lifeline.
I've been a searcher, I've been a fool,
But I've been a long time comin' to you.
I'm hopin' for your love to carry me through
And it's all right.
Oh, tell me where the answer lies.
Is it in the notebook behind your eyes?
When your decision comes to view,
I'll be watchin' my TV, and it'll be watchin' you.
I've been a searcher, I've been a fool,
But I've been a long time comin' to you.
I'm hopin' for your love to carry me through
You're holdin' my baby, and I'm holdin' you,
Yes I am.
Speakin' out.
The opening lines of Neil Young & Crazy Horse's song, "Speakin' Out," introduce us to a scene of an individual attending a movie night, searching for a good time. As the singer gets lost in the cartoon, they find themselves reaching out for a lifeline. This can be interpreted as seeking comfort from someone or something that can act as a guide, providing them with the strength and support they need to get through the tough times. The lines, "I've been a searcher, I've been a fool, but I've been a long time comin' to you," suggest that the singer has been searching for answers to their problems for a while now, but they have finally found someone they can rely on - somebody who can help them navigate through life's complexities.
The song's chorus reframes the opening lyrics, with the singer hoping that their partner's love will be enough to carry them through the struggles that they might face. The lines, "You're holdin' my baby, and I'm holdin' you, and it's all right," evoke a sense of safety, love, and security, drawing us into the moment as the singer finds solace in the arms of their partner.
As the song progresses, the singer asks a series of questions, seeking answers to the riddles of life. They ask, "Oh, tell me where the answer lies. Is it in the notebook behind your eyes? When your decision comes to view, I'll be watching my TV, and it'll be watching you." The lyrics capture the sense of confusion and uncertainty that many of us feel as we grapple with the complexities of life. The reference to the notebook behind someone's eyes suggests that the answer to life's mysteries lies within ourselves, hidden away like a secret. However, as the singer watches their TV, they are also watching others, holding out hope that they might find the answers or inspiration they need to navigate their own lives, just as the cartoons in the movie theatre provided them with a sense of escape earlier in the song.
Overall, "Speakin' Out" is a song about finding love and hope in the midst of life's challenges. Through its lyrics, it captures the sense of searching and seeking that many of us experience as we navigate the twists and turns of life. Ultimately, the song seems to suggest that we can find the strength we need to overcome our trials by relying on the love of those around us.
