She first gained fame with her trip hop-inspired debut album, Whoa, Nelly! (2000), which was a critical and commercial success that spawned two top-10 singles on the Billboard Hot 100, "I'm Like a Bird" and "Turn Off the Light". The first of the two singles won her a Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. Furtado's introspective folk-heavy 2003 second album, Folklore, explored her Portuguese roots. Its singles received moderate success in Europe, but the album's underperformance compared to her debut was regarded as a sophomore slump.
Furtado's third album, Loose (2006), was a smash hit and became her bestselling album, with more than 10 million copies sold worldwide, also making it one of the bestselling albums of the 2000s. Considered a radical image reinvention, Furtado continued to explore her Portuguese heritage while leaning heavier into hip hop. The album spawned four successful number-one singles worldwide; "Promiscuous", "Maneater", "Say It Right" and "All Good Things (Come to an End)".
She released her first Spanish-language album, Mi Plan, in 2009, which won her a Latin Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Album. In 2012, Furtado released her nostalgia-inspired fifth album The Spirit Indestructible. Furtado split with her management and went independent thereafter, releasing her indie-pop sixth album, The Ride, in 2017 under her own label Nelstar Entertainment.
She has won many awards throughout her career, including one Grammy Award from seven nominations, one Latin Grammy Award, ten Juno Awards, one BRIT Award, one Billboard Music Award, one MTV Europe Music Award, one World Music Award, and three Much Music Video Awards. Furtado has a star on Canada's Walk of Fame, and was awarded Commander of the Order of Prince Henry on February 28, 2014, by Aníbal Cavaco Silva, the then-President of Portugal.

I saw that we had forgotten to take the time
I, I saw that you couldn't care less about what you do
You couldn't care less about the lies
You couldn't find the time to cry
We forgot about love
We forgot about faith
We forgot about us
Now our love's floating out the window
Our love's floating out the back door
Our love's floating up in the sky in Heaven
Where it began back in God's hands
You said that you had said all that you had to say
You said, "Baby, it's the end of the day"
And we gave a lot but it wasn't enough
And we got so tired that we just gave up
Now our love's floating out the window
Our love's floating out the back door
Our love's floating up in the sky in Heaven
Where it began back in God's hands, back in God's hands
We didn't respect it
We went and neglected it
We didn't deserve it
But I never expected this
Our love floated out the window
Our love floated out the back door
Our love floated up in the sky to Heaven
It's part of a plan, it's back in God's hands
Back in God's hands
Oh, it didn't last, it's a thing of the past
No, we didn't understand, oh, just what we had
Oh, I want it back, just what we had
I want it back, oh, just what we had
The lyrics to Nelly Furtado's song "En Las Manos De Dios" paint a picture of a love that has died due to neglect and lack of effort put into sustaining it. The singer reflects on the past relationship and regrets the way her and her partner took the love they had for granted. The urgency in her voice as she sings the chorus, "Our love's floating out the window, Our love's floating out the back door, Our love's floating up in the sky in Heaven, Where it began back in God's hands" emphasizes the feeling of hopelessness and despair as she watches the love slip away.
The repeated phrases "We forgot about love, We forgot about faith, We forgot about trust, We forgot about us" give us an insight into the reasons why the love between the two partners started to fade away. It was not just the lack of effort put into the relationship, but it was also the neglect of the virtues that hold a relationship together.
Overall, the song is a reminder that love needs constant attention and care to thrive, and that when neglected, it can slip away quickly. The message in the chorus is one of acceptance and surrender, that the love they had is now in the hands of the divine, and it is time to move on.

yendo a pedazos
se esfuma, se pierde su voz
Nuestro amor se está
yendo al azul de los cielos
donde nació
en las manos de Dios
Tú dices que tú crees
que tú dijiste todo,
esto fue todo y así debe acabar
Y dimos tanto, suficiente no fue
nos acotamos, nos rendimos lo sé
Nuestro amor se está
yendo a pedazos
se esfuma, se pierde su voz
Nuestro amor se está
yendo al azul de los cielos
donde nació
en las manos de Dios
Y no disfrutamos... amarnos a diario
fingiendo ser fuertes... nos equivocamos
Nuestro amor se está
yendo a pedazos
se esfuma, se pierde su voz
Nuestro amor se está
yendo al azul de los cielos
donde nació
en las manos de Dios
Oh no perduró

Aquello no ocurrió.
