She first gained fame with her trip hop-inspired debut album, Whoa, Nelly! (2000), which was a critical and commercial success that spawned two top-10 singles on the Billboard Hot 100, "I'm Like a Bird" and "Turn Off the Light". The first of the two singles won her a Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. Furtado's introspective folk-heavy 2003 second album, Folklore, explored her Portuguese roots. Its singles received moderate success in Europe, but the album's underperformance compared to her debut was regarded as a sophomore slump.
Furtado's third album, Loose (2006), was a smash hit and became her bestselling album, with more than 10 million copies sold worldwide, also making it one of the bestselling albums of the 2000s. Considered a radical image reinvention, Furtado continued to explore her Portuguese heritage while leaning heavier into hip hop. The album spawned four successful number-one singles worldwide; "Promiscuous", "Maneater", "Say It Right" and "All Good Things (Come to an End)".
She released her first Spanish-language album, Mi Plan, in 2009, which won her a Latin Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Album. In 2012, Furtado released her nostalgia-inspired fifth album The Spirit Indestructible. Furtado split with her management and went independent thereafter, releasing her indie-pop sixth album, The Ride, in 2017 under her own label Nelstar Entertainment.
She has won many awards throughout her career, including one Grammy Award from seven nominations, one Latin Grammy Award, ten Juno Awards, one BRIT Award, one Billboard Music Award, one MTV Europe Music Award, one World Music Award, and three Much Music Video Awards. Furtado has a star on Canada's Walk of Fame, and was awarded Commander of the Order of Prince Henry on February 28, 2014, by Aníbal Cavaco Silva, the then-President of Portugal.
Te Busque

I've been fast, I've been slow
I've had nowhere to go
Missed the bus, missed the show
I've been down on my luck
I've felt like giving up
My life locked in a trunk
When it hurt way too much
Needed a reason to live
Some love inside me to give
I couldn't rest, I had to keep on searching
Te busqué debajo de las piedras y no te encontré
En la mañana fría y en la noche te busqué
Hasta enloquecer
Pero tú llegaste a mi vida como una luz
Sanando las heridas de mi corazón
Haciéndome sentir vivo otra vez
I've been too sad to speak and too tired to eat
Been too lonely to sing, the devil cut off my wings
I've been hurt by my past but I feel the future
In my dreams and it lasts, I wake up, I'm not sure
I wanted to find the light
Something just didn't feel right
I needed an answer to end all my searching
Te busqué debajo de las piedras y no te encontré
En la mañana fría y en la noche te busqué
Hasta enloquecer
Pero tú llegaste a mi vida como una luz
Sanando las heridas de mi corazón
Haciéndome sentir vivo otra vez
I look in the mirror the picture's getting clearer
I wanna be myself, but does the world really need her?
I ache for this earth, I stopped going to church
See God in the trees makes me fall to my knees
My depression keeps building like a cup overfilling
My heart so rigid, I keep it in the fridge
It hurts so bad that I can't dry my eyes
'Cause they keep on refillin' with the tears that I cry
The song "Te Busque" by Nelly Furtado is about searching for something and finally finding it. Furtado sings about the ups and downs of life she's gone through, including feeling lost and alone, missing out on opportunities, and being at a breaking point. However, despite all of this, she still keeps searching for something that can make her feel alive. She sings about finding that missing piece in someone else and being able to finally heal past wounds and feel optimistic for the future.
The lyrics are written in both English and Spanish, reflecting Furtado's Portuguese-Canadian background and her ability to seamlessly switch between languages. The chorus of the song, "Te busqué debajo de las piedras y no te encontré," translates to "I looked for you under the stones and I couldn't find you," which emphasizes the idea that the search for something we want, whether it be love, success, or happiness, can be difficult and frustrating, but it's worth it when we eventually find it.
In the second verse, Furtado touches on themes of self-doubt and insecurity, questioning whether or not she's being true to herself and if the world really needs her. She also references her appreciation for nature and spirituality as a source of comfort and inspiration.
Overall, "Te Busque" is a song about the human experience of searching for something meaningful in our lives, and finding that sense of purpose and connection with others.
