Five 'O Clock Plane
Nelson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Someday, maybe one day
I will understand what I did to send your love away
Someday, maybe one day
I'll see through your eyes what made you cry and run away

Cause I, I feel a changing of the seasons
Wonder why, should not givin' me a reason
Are we one or two far gone to say three words, "I love you"
Before you take that five o'clock plane, that's leaving
I'm so tired of tryin' to count eight, nine, ten ways I'll be dyin'
If you should take that five o'clock plane, hey, hey

Someday, baby one day
As we reminisce we'll laugh at all this hearsay
Someday, maybe one day
You'll apologize when you've realized
I never lied to you anyway

Will I, just be a footnote on forever?
Testify before you bury all our treasure

Are we one or two far gone to say three words, "I love you"
Before you take that five o'clock plane, that's leaving
I'm so tired of tryin' to count eight, nine, ten ways I'll be dyin'
If you should take that five o'clock plane, hey, hey
Before you take that five o'clock plane

All those nights we held each other
Body, mind and soul
I can't believe you'd ever let that go

Are we one or two far gone to say three words, "I love you"
Before you take that five o'clock plane, that's leaving
I'm so tired, tired of tryin' to count eight, nine, ten ways I'll be dyin'
If you should take that five o'clock plane, hey, hey

If you should take that five o'clock plane
Are we one or two far gone

If you should take that plane
Before you take that five o'clock plane, hey, hey

Overall Meaning

In Nelson's song "Five O'Clock Plane," the singer reflects on a failed relationship and wonders if they're too far gone to reconcile. He sings, "Someday, maybe one day, I will understand what I did to send your love away; Someday, maybe one day, I'll see through your eyes what made you cry and run away." He's acknowledging that he doesn't quite understand why the relationship ended and regrets not being able to see things from his partner's perspective.

He continues to question the state of their relationship, singing, "Are we one or two far gone to say three words, 'I love you,' before you take that five o'clock plane, that's leaving." He's grappling with whether or not they could salvage their love before it's too late. He acknowledges the pain he's feeling about the possibility of losing his partner, singing, "I'm so tired of trying to count eight, nine, ten ways I'll be dying if you should take that five o'clock plane."

The song ends with a plea for his partner to stay, singing "If you should take that five o'clock plane, hey hey" repeatedly, illustrating the sense of urgency he feels about saving their relationship. The singer is self-reflective and vulnerable in his sentiments, expressing a deep longing for love and connection while acknowledging his part in the relationship's breakdown.

@BJMallory

I can’t help but think that even tho this is obviously a love song about a woman leaving, it’s also a little bit about their grief in losing their father, Rick Nelson, who died in a plane crash on New Year’s Eve 1985.
