Never Enough
Nelson Hawk Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Some days I spend all day on the phone
And other days I would just rather be alone
Some days I feel like the whole world is waiting on an answer
I've been caught under the radar so help me please

It's been that kind of day so just go away
And let the machine say what I want it to say
It's never enough, it keeps getting tough
I wanna listen to your voice but it keeps breaking up
Some days I just don't wanna leave my home
And other days I'm alive like a rolling stone
Sometimes I feel so insignificant like it doesn't really even matter

And I know that we all make mistakes

'Cause I'm guilty as charged with a case of foot in mouth disease
So help me see clearly as I try to just get myself to a place where my lens can adjust

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Nelson Hawk's song "Never Enough" reflect the ups and downs of daily life and the struggle to balance personal needs with social expectations. The first verse describes the ambivalence of wanting both connection and isolation, but feeling overwhelmed by the demands of communication. The lines "Some days I feel like the whole world is waiting on an answer / I've been caught under the radar so help me please" express the pressure of being reachable at all times, while also recognizing a sense of being lost or invisible.

The chorus emphasizes the frustration of feeling like nothing is ever enough - whether it's communication quality or personal fulfillment. The phrase "it keeps getting tough" suggests an ongoing struggle that feels insurmountable. The reference to the singer's voice "breaking up" could be interpreted as a metaphor for their sense of self being fragmented or incoherent. These feelings are contrasted with the second verse, which portrays moments of energy and excitement ("other days I'm alive like a rolling stone"). However, the final lines of the verse underline a sense of insignificance and lack of impact: "Sometimes I feel so insignificant like it doesn't really even matter."

The bridge acknowledges that everyone makes mistakes, but also reflects the desire for clarity and the ability to adjust one's perspective. The line "help me see clearly as I try to just get myself to a place where my lens can adjust" speaks to the idea of needing to step back and gain perspective in order to move forward. Overall, the song captures the complexity of navigating modern life and the ways in which it can be both exciting and overwhelming.

It's never enough. It just keeps getting tough.

@DarkKnightroolz In all honesty I'm not religious, but music like this inspires me. I love bands that are labeled something but don't let that label define them. Paramore, Skillet ad Flyleaf are big, if not huge, stars and the label "Christian" means little as long as they are doing what they love intending to relate and help people in anyway :) If you want worship music then go somewhere else, ...and worship is meant for churches ..just sayin :D

I listened in lockdown i was like oh crap!

@CatDemon67 thanks for finally getting this. your the first person I've actually seen agree with me. I had a long argument with a friend about how he thinks music labeled christian isn't really Christian because its not "worship" music. being Christian labeled is really about inspiring other people, singing about your or other peoples hard/good times, and also, but not only, worship.

@DarkKnightroolz lol he isn't the first person to think that. If you and catdemon were the only ones who thought that, then Hawk Nelson wouldn't be labeled Christian. Most people agree with you there actually, me and just about anyone else who knows what Christian music is. You just need smarter friends lol.

@Kevinthaninja AGREED!
