In late 1985, Scott Kelly, Dave Edwardson and Jason Roeder (formerly members of Violent Coercion) founded the band as a hardcore outfit, borrowing from British crust punk such as Amebix. It has gradually progressed through a variety of styles, arriving at a mixture of heavy metal and acoustic, minimalist ambiance which has proved influential on the doom metal scene.
From 1990 to 1993, Adam G. Kendall was recruited to create the visuals and perform live with the band. Following his departure from touring, Pete Inc. took over the job, although Kendall continued to contribute visuals for the band until as late as 1997. Kendall also shot the footage for the "Locust Star" video. Josh Graham took over live visuals in early 2000, and was with the band until late 2012 when he left to pursue his band A Storm of Light full time. He also created album artwork for 2004's The Eye of Every Storm and 2007's Given to the Rising.
Often experimental and psychedelic in nature, the visuals have added to the reputation of Neurosis' live performances. Many of the visuals for their tours supporting Through Silver in Blood can be found in Ken Russell's film Altered States. Other images are included in the enhanced portion of the Sovereign mini album, and on the A Sun That Never Sets DVD video release. The majority of the DVD release was directed by Josh Graham, with an additional video by Chad Rullman.
Additionally, the band have founded their own independent record label, Neurot Recordings, which, in addition to releasing material from Neurosis and its associated projects, has since become home to several innovative musicians.
Scott Kelly left Neurosis in 2022 following his admission of family abuse since then band went on hiatus. Remaining members concentrated on their own projects and due to the fact that Scott was one of leading composers and singer in the band it is unlikely to see Neurosis performing again.
Band members:
Scott Kelly - guitar, vocals (left /was expelled in 2022)
Steve Von Till - guitar, vocals
Dave Edwardson - bass guitar, keyboards, synthesizer, vocals
Noah Landis - organ, piano, samples
Jason Roeder - drums
Josh Graham - visual artist
2) Neurosis are a thrash metal band from Bogotá, D.C., Colombia, formed in 1987. They play in the raw, relentless South American style, influenced equal amounts by hardcore punk as death metal. They were known as Neurosis Inc. for some time and released a full-length, a live album, a split and a compilation under that name. Before adding "Inc." in their name, they toured under War Messiah in the United States to avoid confusion with the domestic Neurosis.
The Last You'll Know
Neurosis Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
he is the last you'll know
all revealed in our solace ú see three eyes
all our crimes trial waits everyone
the presence of old eyes is here
grant me the pure heart ú we've lived through
in times of light fire is water
all answer, transcendence ú all present
to guide us through terminus and feed us to light
The song "The Last You'll Know" by Neurosis is a haunting and introspective piece that is open to individual interpretation. However, one likely interpretation of the lyrics is that they refer to a prophetic figure or leader who will bring mercy or peace to humanity, but only comes at the very end, after all other options are exhausted. This figure may be seen as a savior or a warning, as the lyrics go on to say that "all revealed in our solace" and that "trial waits everyone," suggesting that this final figure will expose all of humanity's wrongdoings and judge them accordingly. The reference to "three eyes" may symbolize the idea of all-seeing or omniscience, while the phrase "the presence of old eyes" adds to the sense of a wise and ancient prophet.
The idea of seeking a "pure heart" and having to "live through" difficult times suggests that the singer is not necessarily comfortable with the judgment brought by this final figure, and that they see it as potentially necessary but also painful. The references to light and fire being reversed may symbolize a sense of upheaval or confusion, as things that were once clear are now uncertain. Ultimately, the lyrics seem to suggest that this final figure is both present and yet absent, as they guide humanity through "terminus" (the end) but also seem to be something that can only be reached or known after death.

Well put, my friend. I am religious as well but I cringe when I see some people bashing Atheists for whatever reason. Live and let live, we're all humans here. Also, this album is badass as hell.

This was the album that got me into Neurosis 13 years ago (I was 16). Between this one and EHG's 'Confederacy of Ruined Lives' I've been a sludge/doom fan ever since.

I once decided to listen to this album loud as fuck while on acid and when I got to the part of this song that starts around 4:35 I started having a really bad trip, the walls in the room started to look like they were melting and with each slow chord the heavy, distorted guitar played I felt like I was getting smaller and I just felt like I was losing it. I turned the music off immediately and didn't listen to neurosis for some time after that...
