C
Nevil Robbie Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Got a job
That's okay
But they've got me workin' night and day
Punchin' in
Punchin' out
Is this really what life's all about?

What ya gonna do, what ya gonna feel?
I don't know
What ya gonna feel, what ya gonna do?
Ooh, won't someone tell me?
What ya wanna say, what ya wanna do?
There's only one thing left to say
What ya wanna do, what ya wanna say? Woo

C'est la vie, c'est la vie
That's just the way it goes (that's life)
Oh yeah
C'est la vie, c'est la vie
That's just the way it goes (that's life)

Baby's gone, all alone (all alone)
Are you sad because you're on your own?
Get that girl, party down
There's so many good ones still around

What ya gonna do, what ya gonna feel?
I don't know
What ya gonna feel, what ya gonna do?
Ooh, won't someone tell me
What ya wanna say, what ya wanna do?
I guess there's just one thing to say
What ya wanna do, what ya wanna say? Woo-hoo

C'est la vie, c'est la vie
That's just the way it goes (that's life)
Oh yeah, ooh
C'est la vie, c'est la vie
That's just the way it goes (that's life), oh

Hey it's J.J. (hey it's J.J.)
What you been doin'?
You say your car broke down, the thing just isn't movin'
J.-j.j., don't you know?
When you're down there's just one way to go
Now sing it

C'est la vie, c'est la vie
That's just the way it goes (that's life)
Sometimes
C'est la vie, c'est la vie (ay, yeah)
That's just the way it goes
C'est la vie, c'est la vie
That's just the way it goes (that's life)
Mh-ay, ooh-yeah, mmh-yeah
C'est la vie, c'est la vie
Oh, that's just the way it goes (that's life)
You know it, ooh, yeah

C'est la vie, c'est la vie
That's just the way it goes (that's life)
C'est la vie, c'est la vie

(C'est la vie)

(That's life)

Overall Meaning

The song 'C'est La Vie' by Robbie Nevil is a commentary on the monotony of daily life and the need for some kind of escape. The lyrics describe a mundane life, in which the singer has a job but it's not fulfilling and they're working long hours. They question whether this is all there is to life and ask for guidance on what they should do or feel. The recurrent chorus 'C'est La Vie' is used to suggest resignation and acceptance, as if to say this is just the way things are and there's nothing we can do about it. The song also touches on the idea of loneliness and the need to find joy in life through partying and being around people.

One interpretation of the song is that it is a reaction to the excitement of the 1980s, when music and fashion were colourful and dynamic, contrasting with the mundane realities of adult life. It could be seen as a critique of the way society forces people into jobs they don't necessarily enjoy, making them feel trapped and lacking control over their own lives. However, by using the French phrase 'C'est La Vie', Robbie Nevil is almost mocking those who find themselves living these uninspiring lives, suggesting perhaps that they're not taking enough control for themselves.

Interestingly, the song never really resolves the questions it asks. We never find out what the singer wants to do or say, or whether they find any escape from their boring life. We do get an upbeat ending though, with a friend cheering the singer up by encouraging them to sing and reminding them that friends are always around to help. The lasting impression the song leaves is one of resignation but also a sense of looking for something more, even if it's out of reach for most.

Old boomer here, just turned 75 a few weeks ago. Was in my mid 30s when I first heard it and immediately adopted it as my go to if things got a little rough in life. Just dropped in to get the link to send to a friend. While here I decided to leave a comment and listen to it once again (4 times lol).

Itโ€™s called the decade of decadence for a reason. The pinnacle of of this society. Glad to have lived at the peak of this nation.
