One of my favorite songs back in 1960. I was 15. Like you Steve I listened to KDIA in San Francisco/Oakland. Also, KYA and KEWB. Yeah, "Over You" had good sized play on the West Coast.

This is a "test" song--by some miracle it comes over the radio when a person or people, male or female or whatever are in the mix, & I surreptitiously glance around to see what effect if any this aural monster has. Now if the folks just go on about their yakking away or chowing down and take no notice of the kickin' ass tune I immediately, irrevocably consign said individual/s to the dustbin as far as sympatico folks go. Yeah, a very good test. Surprising how many flunk, but that's the way....

Toussaint wrote a good bulk of the NOLA R&B songs in those days. He used the pen name Naomi Neville when he wrote a song sung by a woman.

He wrote or co-wrote these major hits,Southern Nights, Mother-In-Law, Working In The Coal Mine, Fortune Teller and even the Al Hirt instrumental hit Java. In 1998 Allen Toussaint was inducted into The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.

@radgeek01 , You're right. Dark lyrics. Remember "Mack the Knife" and the Beatle's "Run for Your Life". I remember loving these songs too and then listening to the lyrics and going...."Katy Bar the Door"! Great songs but like you say, dark lyrics. I may be wrong but I seem to remember "Mack the Knife" being banned in some cities like Chicago from being played on the radio. Anybody else remember?

@srercrcr That's an understatement at best! I heard this a lot on WLAC at the time, and just loved it. Then never heard it again for years until I found a copy in the 70s. I almost fainted dead away at the lyrics. If you can get past the lyrics, it's still the quintessential New Orleans R&B record - all the parts are there.

This is news to me as I always thought this was Aaron, too. I first heard the song in Chicago in the '60s and loved it but was never able to find a recording in later years. Now that I really listen to it and after hearing Aaron sing on TV this morning I believe Aaron's voice is a little higher OR maybe I'm wrong altogether ;-)

What separates this from "Teen Angel" or "Last Kiss" is that the singer is threatening to kill his baby himself! Listen to the end. Of course, it's "good-natured" as in Arthur Crudup/Elvis' "Baby Let's Play House" with its line, "Id rather see you dead, little girl/Than to be with another man", which J Lennon borrowed for "Run For Your Life".....

For people who are bewildered by the lyrics, revisiting the era when this song was out could be helpful. This song was popular during a period before the women's liberation movement. Women had not come into their own identity. Generally, people accepted the idea that a man could seek revenge upon a woman who left him, especially if he had a job. Back then, women still lingered to the 100-year tradition that women were not to pursue secular careers; they were expected to reproduce, take care of the home, and raise children Women were expected to marry so that a man could take care of her, and if she had a man taking care of her, she was expected to do everything within her power to demonstrate her gratefulness. Leaving, for any reason, was considered highly ungrateful-- just think how many women would die to be in her very place. Hence, from the perspective of the people back then, for a woman to walk away from a perfect situation, as they perceived it, no amount of explaining could exonerate a thankless hag. She could never have a valid reason for leaving. He works; she's at home; he takes cares of her. What trifle could she not endure? Thus, although people may not have agreed to killing a woman, many probably felt they understood how a man could kill a no good hag who probably deserved it. During that time it was still very legal in many states for a man to beat his wife if he deemed it necessary. .

srercrcr - Those 78's you must have purchased at two different times. Bue Suede Shoes was available in early 1956. Peggy Sue by Buddy Holly was not available to purchase until late summer 1957. Two great records I also bought on 78rpm. Along with three great hits by The Platters, Only You, The Great Pretender and (You've Got) The Magic Touch. Was there ever a better lead singer than the late Tony Williams? I don't think so.
