Wonderful I couldn't be a bigger Jesus Christ Superstar fan and have seen many many different versions but I really really liked this first a lot she took her time with her presentation and it was very very heartfelt which is the key to the song not just having the vocal chops to do it but it's got to come out with emotion

I love the way she played the rythem and the way the accompaniment keeps up with her well practiced improv.
I really appreciate being able to relax and sink into the mood of the song without cringing at the quality of the presentation.
I think she held every note just right and held her attention to it all the way through. I imagine this performance is very gratifying and took a lot of work.

Yvonne Elliman, the original singer of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Jesus Christ Superstar” and song “I don’t know how to love him” is still the best, the feelings she puts into her performance while performing her role in the play makes you feel she truly believes what her heart is trying to express, instead of just an act. IMO Helen Reddy’s rendition almost as enjoyable with Sara Bareilles a distant third. They both are performing to a microphone!

There are two truly great performances of this, First Elliman's for the never equaled emotion and Brightman for technical beauty. Elliman so beautifully conveys the emotion that I have to give the prize to her. Bareilles does OK with the emotion, but neither Bareilles nor Elliman is a singer of the technical caliber of Brightman.

Mary Magdalene. One of the original sinner-to-Christian soul transitions.
When I listen to the lyrics of this song, it almost brings tears to my eyes, because the platitude of ‘love’ of which Jesus Christ speaks is completely foreign to her — mainly because she’s been beat-down & abused throughout her enormously difficult life & she probably doesn’t feel worthy of what Christ has to offer. She’s confused & conflicted about her emotions because she’s superimposing ‘romantic love’ over “agape” — the spiritual love Christ imparts to her through His grace & compassion.
She doesn’t “get it” at this juncture of her life — but she will — because later on, she will witness the unfathomable sacrifice Jesus Christ endures for mankind… & that’s when she REALLY gets it. ✝️

Recorded versions that are edited/spliced together in the studio should never be compared to live performances. I love Elliman too, but she was not a great live singer. And vocally, Sara is a more skilled, nuanced singer.
