[JUDAS]
My God! I saw him - he looked three-quarters dead!
And he was so bad I had to turn my head
You beat him so hard that he was bent and lame
And I know who everybody's gonna blame
I don't believe he knows I acted for our good
I'd save him all this suffering if I could!
Don't believe ... our good ... save him ... if I could

[ANNAS]
Cut the confessions, forget the excuses
I don't understand why you're filled with remorse
All that you've said has come true with a vengeance
The mob turned against him - you backed the right horse

[CAIAPHAS]
What you have done will be the saving of Israel
You'll be remembered forever for this
And not only that, you've been paid for your efforts
Prettly good wages for one little kiss

[JUDAS]
Christ! I know you can't hear me
But I only did what you wanted me to
Christ! I'd sell out the nation
For I have been saddled with the murder of you
I have been spattered with innocent blood
I shall be dragged through the slime and the mud
I have been spattered with innocent blood
I shall be dragged through the slime and the slime and the slime and the mud!

I don't know how to love him
I don't know why he moves me
He's a man - he's just a man
He's not a king - he's just the same
As anyone I know
He scares me so
When he's cold and dead, will he let me be?
Does he love me too? Does he care for me?

My mind is in darkness now - my God, I am sick! I've been used!
And you knew all the time!
God! I'll never ever know why you chose me for your crime
Your foul, bloody crime!
You have murdered me! You have murdered me!

[CHOIR]
Poor old Judas
So long, Judas

That's kinda haunting. The first line of his first verse in the movie was "My mind is clearer now." His first line of his last verse alive in the movie is "My mind is in darkness."

He starts the musical looking at Jesus through the lens of simple political activism, and then spends the next few days becoming aware of his position as the most important pawn in a game of cosmic chess played for the souls of everyone on Earth. It's absolutely Lovecraftian, if you think about it.

Why

@phantasosxgames8488

@@hannahlarocco4699 because Jesus Death and endevoirs were fixed , all controlled by God to make Jesus a scapegoat of Mankind's Sins....and he fixed Judas in his path as well.
All of that while allowing Free Will....but what matters Free Will , when the paths ahead are fogged , and only one was not? wouldn't a person chooses the unfogged , deemed to be safest and assured?
In that sense , Judas was a pawn.

@tulopadullo_n_5700

@@phantasosxgames8488 as has been recognized by some currents even in the Middle Ages, Judas is the martyr in this story, not Jesus

@Highwind_

@@tulopadullo_n_5700 Reminds me to the final part of Jorge Luis Borges short tale: The Sect of the Thirty.

Why are there so many people here getting pressed about commenters sympathizing with Judas? This musical makes him sympathetic. This /entire musical/ is about these characters being pawns in God’s plan. I don’t see how you can like this musical but miss that message.

There’s nothing Judas could have done to stop himself, that’s why the angels sing “well done Judas,” when he betrays Jesus, that’s why he says “I’ve been used,” “I’ll never know why you chose me for your crime.” This was all God’s plan.

Weather you believe that’s accurate or not to the Bible & the teachings of Christianity is irrelevant because that’s the message in /this/ version of the story. You don’t have to like it, you don’t have to agree, but you can’t get mad at people who separate this version from their own beliefs, or who agree with this interpretation.

Thank you, agreed

Carl is once again, mesmerizing in this scene. He portrayed Judas' fear, hurt, and realization of doomed fate that he now fully understands, it was all planned just to use him to facilitate Jesus' death. Yes, he betrayed Jesus, but he hates that he was the one chosen to do it, because he did truly love Jesus. So well acted and sung by Carl. Just a powerful portrayal in every way!
