My ma used to listen to this album in the car and at home on the stereo and it blew my mind how they fucked up Jesus for doing the right thing and whipped the fuck out of him and even counted each time they did it. This album was a huge deal to me as a kid in the 80's and 90's.

I could write paragraphs about the genius of this film production just from this opening scene alone. The location, the camera angles, etc...Everything was just so perfectly done. And for a 1973 production, it felt so much ahead of its time.

@@gavmac8254 Let's just look at this Overture. Each actor gets off the bus and transitions into their character before our eyes. They each take their place. Most notably, the actor playing Judas steps away from the rest of the cast and looks back with concern and suspicion. It all parallels the story of Jesus as a prophecy: The belief that God had pre-ordained all of this to happen, as if it were God's script and each person in the Bible is there to play their role in his script. To mirror that belief, each actor steps into place to fulfill the character they were pre-ordained to play. The director is literally showing us that this story was pre-written and everyone is going to do what they were already tasked to do.

I love the fact that the Gospel (Or any story for that matter) can be told in the form of a rock opera filled with anachronisms. But the story is blasphemous. Judas turns out to be the hero and Jesus turns out to be the fool!!!

Judas wasn't the literal devil, he was a man like you and me who struggled and made terrible decisions, he is the main antagonist

All rock operas fall by the wayside when compared to this for its pounding dynamism and succinct libretto; and for cultural impact alone, there is nothing higher or more majestic. AND it's one of the few Jesus stories told from the perspective of the villain - Judas.

No one in the Bible is mocked in its entire runtime (maybe King Herod's song provides the musical's only bit of comic relief). Jesus is portrayed as both human and divine. Judas is shown to agonize over his conflicted views, as does Pilate. Mary Magdalene loves Jesus. It shows Simon and his zealotry. Jesus is shown tortured and suffering on the cross with total reverence for the story. People are portrayed mocking or defying Jesus in the musical, but the BIBLE ITSELF recounts stories of people mocking and doubting Jesus. Maybe watch the movie before you pass judgement. The one valid criticism I can think of is that the musical, for some reason, omits the resurrection, but I don't think it's maliciously done or to sow skepticism.

Take in to account the revealing attire, the man prancing around like women, the gentleman who stands in the doorway of the bus with breasts drawn on his hat. There is a complete and utter lack of decency for anyone in this film. Yes, God's people did deny our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ when he walked among them, but they did not dress and dance about in such a manner. No self-respecting Jew would ever act in such a way, and God still loves his people, if didn't there would be no upcoming Jacob's trouble. A reinactment of this type is an insault to God.

This is one of the coolest intros to a musical I have seen. The first few moments are just showing ancient stone ruins that are begging to tell a story of something eerily peculiar that happened long ago but they are unable to tell it, and then a bus of hippies come in to tell it for them. Its a cool behind the scenes look at things with a lot of deeper meaning to it. Very well done. :)

When l was 13 year old,in my country we were living in big troubles,but this production came to us and me and my friends could scape of violence and so l can write these words nowadays. Those moments were very hard. I'm talking about Chile in 1973. This Opera saved many lives 'cause we prefered not to fight but listening to that... Congratulations to everybody...

It sounds like the choir is singing C#-F# and then orchestra starts droning C# major, right? But the F# seems very sharp, or maybe just some just intonation is confusing things there... so the end result isn't quite recognizable as C#sus4 nor it manifests as a convincing IV overlaid on top of I...

I remember watching this movie as a little kid thanks to my dad, I have loved this musical my entire life and got the incredible fortune to see it performed live on stage in Chicago before the pandemic. This is such an incredible depiction of musical prowess, powerful story telling, and the struggle between right and wrong. I adore this movie and it should be preserved and celebrated for years and years to come

I saw this when it first came out, we knew the theater projectionist so we got to see it 8 times in a matter of days, I was 14~15, we lived in St. Croix in the USVI, it also drove me to playing the guitar, its been playing in stereo in my head rent free ever since, just absolutely beautiful, its been an inspiration to my life and how I live, love & treat other people, I'm a bit of a hippy so it fits quit well, I love it. It is a fantastic moment. Norman Jewison is a great director, kuddos to him for this shot. I notice that the same technique was used when Darth Maul shows up in dramatic fashion to kick off the final battle in Phantom Menace. The quick cut to Maul with a zoom in, punctuated by John Williams' music (Duel of the Fates). This movie did it first.

3:00 -- That D-minor riff is the most gargantuan thing in rock opera history! If Andrew Lloyd-Webber never composed another thing in his life, he was already immortal through this one riff.
And accompanied by the RAISING OF THE CROSS!

I remember when a friend of mine introduced me to this when I was 21. As a Deep Purple fanatic and 70s rock connoisseur, I couldn't believe I had discovered this gem -- that hit ALL the right marks!
What an excellent, clear HD video as well!

In the late eighties I worked a very boring assembly line and to pass the time I went thru the entire sings of the musical. I did the rolls of judas, plate, Jesus. I sang under my breath and twisted my face to express plates frustration. The assembly line foreman saw me, walked up and asked if I was all right, if I was feeling well. Oops. Watch where you play, kiddies.

I originally saw this movie in the theatre as a little kid and was in awe of it though I have never been a religious person. Bought the double album back then and listened to it so many times I knew every word of it and it came with written lyrics.

I was 13 when this movie came out. I thought it was so strange the way they made it so hippyish. But it stuck with me and I listen to it every year and I watch it every few years.

Ian Gillian from Deep Purple was on the original album of this as Jesus, back in the 80’s I saw DP and it was around the Easter holiday and in the middle of “Strange Kind of Woman” Ian began singing the JCS theme, the band immediately kicked into the song, Blackmore included and it ROCKED!!!

We have seen it twice in Amsterdam in one week, we were mesmerized. We`d go a third time no doubt!! It is the most beautiful thing I have ever seen, the movie is great, the musical is awesome and the DVD is for the car :) I listen to it a lot on youtube while I game or email. It just makes me feel so good inside :)
