Like the Jackson 5 before them, New Edition became a pop phenomenon, and were big enough to have Madonna as an opening act during their early days.
The group parted company with Starr in 1984; Starr responded by promptly creating the group New Kids on the Block, essentially New Edition with Caucasian teenagers. After the split the boys still received success from singles such as "Cool It Now, Mr. Telephone Man", and "Count Me Out". Around 1986, Bobby Brown was voted out of the group, due to behavioral problems during concerts, He went on to pursue a solo career in 1987 but did not find success in his solo ventures until 1988. Brown was replaced by former solo child star Johnny Gill who would become an official member that same year. The group's sound also evolved at this time from bubblegum pop-styled R&B to smoother, more adult music. The new material, primarily produced by Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, had a strong new jack swing feel. The first album recorded with Gill, Heart Break, had numerous R&B hits, including "If It Isn't Love", "Can You Stand The Rain", "N.E. Heart Break", and "Boys To Men" (which later lent its name to the Philadelphia-based group Boyz II Men).
New Edition essentially broke up in 1989, with Bell, Bivins, and DeVoe forming the popular hip hop group Bell Biv DeVoe, Ralph Tresvant beginning his solo career and Gill restarting his solo career, with more success this time. In 1991, the group had a semi-reunion of sorts when they recorded a remix of the Bell Biv DeVoe track "Word To The Mutha!" in which all six members performed and appeared in the music video.
In 1996, the reunion became complete, as all six former members reunited for the Home Again album. Although the album featured the hit singles "Hit Me Off" and "I'm Still In Love With You", the ensuing tour would prove disastrous for the group. By the middle leg of the tour in 1997, Bobby Brown and Mike Bivins left, due to egos clashing and a less-than-harmonious time with the other members. The band canceled the tour and went on indefinite hiatus soon afterward.
The band reformed again in 2002 without Bobby Brown and released an album on Bad Boy Records entitled "One Love". They are currently working in the studio with plans to release another album with all six members in 2008.

See, that's when I met a sexy girl
She was lookin' so right
She said, "I wanna take you for a trip around the world"
And by the look in her eyes, ho
The girl was serious!
She wore no disguise, oh no
(I thought it was me), I thought it was me who makes the girl this way
(I thought it was me), I came to find out she's like that every day
(I thought it was me), I thought it was me that makes that girl so wild
(I thought it was me), I found out she's like that with all the guys
Yo, I love bein a bachelor
Ricky said, "yo, that girl's a good catch for ya"
She and I choose to cruise in my love boat
My waterbed, kept us afloat
I had to prove my manhood
Show her that the b-I-v was damn good, understood?
I never had my boat rocked like that before, yo!!
The way we left the spot, all systems ready to go
She said, "sit back and relax, I'm runnin' the show"
I couldn't hesitate, it was much too late
That girl had got me straight, and I was ready to go, yeah!

She left the room to get comfy and cozy (wha?)
Then the r to the o to the n got nosey
Cruising guys was her favorite past-time
Takin' chances almost got her lifetime
She said, "you only live once"
Stayin' loose, made many head turns
If you did her wrong, you just might get burned

The New Edition's song B.B.D. follows the story of the singer meeting a sexy girl and taking her out on a trip around the world. The girl appeared serious and was open about her intentions. However, as the singer got closer with the girl, he realized that she acted in the same way with all the guys. This discovery caused him to shift his perceptions of the situation as he initially had thought that he had the power to make her act this way.
The singer continues to enjoy his time with the girl, cruising in his love boat and showing her his manhood. However, his friend Ron warned him that the girl was known for cruising guys as her favorite pastime and taking chances that had almost cost her her lifetime. Despite this, the singer continues to have a good time with her and realizes that he was not the only one who triggered her wildness; she was like that with all the guys.
The song portrays the idea of men's need for validation and the perception that they hold the power over women's actions. The singer thought that he had the power to make the girl wild, but she was already that way with other men. Additionally, the song highlights the idea of enjoying the moment and not worrying about the future consequences, even if your actions could have potential dangers.
