Like the Jackson 5 before them, New Edition became a pop phenomenon, and were big enough to have Madonna as an opening act during their early days.
The group parted company with Starr in 1984; Starr responded by promptly creating the group New Kids on the Block, essentially New Edition with Caucasian teenagers. After the split the boys still received success from singles such as "Cool It Now, Mr. Telephone Man", and "Count Me Out". Around 1986, Bobby Brown was voted out of the group, due to behavioral problems during concerts, He went on to pursue a solo career in 1987 but did not find success in his solo ventures until 1988. Brown was replaced by former solo child star Johnny Gill who would become an official member that same year. The group's sound also evolved at this time from bubblegum pop-styled R&B to smoother, more adult music. The new material, primarily produced by Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, had a strong new jack swing feel. The first album recorded with Gill, Heart Break, had numerous R&B hits, including "If It Isn't Love", "Can You Stand The Rain", "N.E. Heart Break", and "Boys To Men" (which later lent its name to the Philadelphia-based group Boyz II Men).
New Edition essentially broke up in 1989, with Bell, Bivins, and DeVoe forming the popular hip hop group Bell Biv DeVoe, Ralph Tresvant beginning his solo career and Gill restarting his solo career, with more success this time. In 1991, the group had a semi-reunion of sorts when they recorded a remix of the Bell Biv DeVoe track "Word To The Mutha!" in which all six members performed and appeared in the music video.
In 1996, the reunion became complete, as all six former members reunited for the Home Again album. Although the album featured the hit singles "Hit Me Off" and "I'm Still In Love With You", the ensuing tour would prove disastrous for the group. By the middle leg of the tour in 1997, Bobby Brown and Mike Bivins left, due to egos clashing and a less-than-harmonious time with the other members. The band canceled the tour and went on indefinite hiatus soon afterward.
The band reformed again in 2002 without Bobby Brown and released an album on Bad Boy Records entitled "One Love". They are currently working in the studio with plans to release another album with all six members in 2008.

You gotta do it yourself
Ow!
y'all think this is gonna be another one of those funky joints
Heart, soul, d-d-dance!
If I was you, and you were me, you ought a be winning
If you want something better, you gotta want to keep your all
If you feel the same as me, girl, you gotta learn to take the fall
Now I find out that nothing is given
Don't know where the cards may fall
All I know is that we gotta get it
We've gotta make it on our own
Well I guess we're gonna have to take control
(On our own)
If it's up to us, we've got to take it home
(On our own)
Can't you see that all we need to be a go-getter
Gotta make your own decisions, gotta go for what ya know
There comes a time in our lives, you want to be bigger
Gotta keep, keep on pushing, you gotta learn to take control, yeah
Well I guess we're gonna have to take control
(On our own)
If it's up to us, we've got to take it home
Gotta, gotta, take it home, gotta, gotta, gotta take it home (on our own)
Heart, soul, d-d-dance!
Too hot to handle, too cold to hold
They're called Ghostbusters and they're in control
Had 'em throwin' a party for a bunch of children
While all the while, the slime was under the building
So they packed up the crew, got a grip came quick
Grabbed the proton packs on their backs, and they split
To battle out Vigo, the master of evil
Try to battle my boys? That's not legal
(Oh we oh) They're in control
(Oh we oh) why why ya know it
I said they're in control
(Oh we oh) why why ya know it
(Oh we oh) why why ya know it
Well I guess we're gonna have to take control
Gotta, gotta, gotta, gotta, gotta, gotta (on our own)
If it's up to us, we've got to take it home
Too hot to handle, too cold to hold, they're called Ghostbusters and they're in control
(on our own)
Well I guess we're gonna have to take control
Gotta, gotta, take it home, gotta, gotta take it home (on our own)
If it's up to us, we've got to take it home
Gotta, gotta, take it home, gotta, gotta, gotta take it home (on our own)
(Oh we oh) OW!
(Oh we oh) why why ya know it
(Oh we oh) Uh!
(Oh we oh) why why ya know it
Well I guess we're gonna have to take control
The song On Our Own by New Edition is a stirring anthem about taking control of your life and making it better. The lyrics talk about how we're always waiting for someone else to come and save us or do the hard work for us, but in reality, we need to take matters into our own hands. The first verse talks about how if you want to win at life, you need to be willing to give it your all, and that nothing is given to you β you have to earn it. The chorus emphasizes this idea, with the repeated phrase "Well I guess we're gonna have to take control." The second verse talks about how we need to make our own decisions and push ourselves to be our best selves, and that sometimes we need to learn to take a fall to come back stronger.
The song uses the iconic theme song from the movie Ghostbusters as the chorus, adding a fun and nostalgic touch to the otherwise serious lyrics. The connection to the movie is fitting, as the idea of taking control and being a go-getter is similar to the film's message of facing your fears and taking on ghosts head-on. Overall, the song is a powerful anthem about self-motivation and taking charge of your own destiny.

A song written about the Ghostbusters slaps harder than 90% of the music in 2023. (I know the song is about being a go getter) 80's and 90's music is just superior. Say what you want about Bobby Brown, the man knew how to entertain.
