125 Mph
New Model Army Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm heading north, I'm heading home doing 125
I close my eyes and count to ten
Ha ha, I'm still alive
Perfect, perfect tunnel vision, razor sharp and racing, racing
These moments, immortal,
No one touches this

These things they flow as blood must flow
Dust to dust and wind must blow
Nothing that I need to know or ever understand
These things they flow as blood must flow
Dust to dust and wind must blow
You can die before you get old
But me, I'm going to live forever

The music plays, the party swings, the gaiety walls come closing in
I catch your eye, you take my hand, out into the night we run
Dancing down those dead-end streets, howling at the moon like little kids
Out on the grass at the top of the hill, your breath tastes sweet

These things they flow as blood must flow

And if I say I hate this place, don't take it as personal
And just because I want to kill somebody doesn't mean to say that I will
And I don't think that that makes me crazy and anyway I'm way past caring
There's a ride leaves out of here at nine. What do you say?

Tonight we'll flow as blood must flow

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to New Model Army's song "125 Mph" introduce us to a daring protagonist who is heading home at a breakneck speed of 125 miles per hour. The singer seems to be in the grip of an exhilarating adrenaline rush, as he closes his eyes, counts to ten, and laughs at the fact that he is still alive. He describes his tunnel vision, taking in the razor-sharp speed of his car hurtling forward, moments that are immortal, that nobody can take away from him. And yet, he reminds us that life is fleeting, that things come and go like the flow of blood, the dust, and the wind. His attitude towards death is cavalier, as he declares that he plans to live forever.

As the music plays, the singer's world expands to that of a party, where he is caught up in the gaiety of the moment, and takes a stranger's hand, running off into the night. Together, they dance through dead-end streets, howling at the moon like little kids, caught up in the passion of the moment. The lyrics emphasize the fleetingness of life, as the singer declares his willingness to kill someone, yet doesn't believe that his thought makes him crazy. In the end, he leaves the listener with the question, "What do you say?", leaving us to wonder whether we should be swept up in the moment, or take the ride out and leave it all behind.

Overall, "125 Mph" is a song about the rush of life and the thrill of being alive. The lyrics are evocative of the kind of recklessness that comes from youth, where the present moment is everything and the future is far away. Despite the song's message about the transience of life and the inevitability of death, the singer chooses to focus on the moment, on the feeling of speed, the rush of the music, and the connection with others in the moment.

"Estou indo para o norte, estou indo para casa fazendo 125
Eu fecho meus olhos e conto até dez
Ha ha, ainda estou vivo
Perfeito, visão de túnel perfeita, afiada como navalha e corrida, corrida
Esses momentos, imortais,

I have seen them in Chicago several times and always feel privileged that they even bother to come to America. On the tour for Impurity, during this song, they dragged out the quiet middle part until I could not take it any longer. Before Justin starts singing, "And if I say I hate this place, don't take it as personal..." I finally yelled out, "Do you hate this place?" He looked right at me and said, "Actually, no it's not bad," and then started singing. Since then, on later tours, I've given Justin copies of photos I took at that show, had my picture taken with him and finally got to tell him what his music means to me. His music is one of the things that has kept me alive. Justin Sullivan is one of the nicest, most sincere people EVER, especially in the music industry. This band is one of the real ones; real people, real musicians, real story tellers. Long live New Model Army!!
