New Model Army Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The vans they come in convoys now, stealing through the dawn
Silent in the countryside in the hills up to the north
There's road blocks on the Meden bridge
There's click, click clicking on the phone
They're sealing off our villages, sealing off our homes
This ain't some tin-pot story arriving from a distant shore
But our own sweet, green and pleasant land in 1984
Her father crossed the battle lines in the first months of the war
She frowns down at the soup kitchen - she doesn't have a father anymore
It's cold in the early mornings, standing with your mates
Staring at the thick blue line armed and ready at the gates
This ain't some tin-pot story arriving from a distant shore
But our own sweet, green and pleasant land in 1984

The servants of our great nation
Have lied in the name of us all
While the officers of peace and order
Are busy breaking every law
There's hundreds on trumped-up charges
Hundreds on the streets
The future of our villages
Sown with bitter seeds
And hatred starts to rumble where there was no hate before
In our own sweet green and pleasant land in 1984
Nobody wanted to see the blood
As the blue lights flash through in the night
But all the words fell on deaf ears
And now the blind frustration bites

Two nations under one crown divided more and more
In our own sweet green and pleasant land in 1984

Overall Meaning

The song '1984' by New Model Army is a protest against the Thatcher government's policies and the direction in which the country was heading. The first verse speaks about the arrival of police vehicles in convoys under the cover of darkness, sealing off villages and homes. The singer says that this is not some distant, foreign story but is happening in their own country, in the year 1984. The second verse refers to a father who was killed fighting in a war, leaving his daughter without a father. The daughter is now in a soup kitchen, and the singer talks about standing with his mates in the cold, staring at the line of police officers guarding the gates, armed and ready. Again, the singer emphasizes that this is happening in their own country.

The final verse speaks of how the government has lied and how the officers who should keep peace and order are breaking the law. There are lots of people being charged with trumped-up charges and even more on the streets. The singer talks about the hatred in the land, where it wasn't present before. Nobody wanted to see bloodshed, but all the words have failed, and people are frustrated and angry. The song speaks of the division between the two nations of the UK, and how this division is growing.

My late mother was a Militant that regularly took me on the picket lines. RIP mum and see you up there soon.

@nuafc

Brilliant. The heroic struggle of the miners in 84/85 must never be forgotten. Neither should the state oppression used against them.

@francescxavierbulto9848

Neither should the innocent victims that were caught up in it. Heroic? That is a big ask for me
