They released only one album, 1998's 'Maybe You've Been Brainwashed Too', a critically acclaimed pop rock album heavily influenced by classic rock and soul of the 60s and 70s that contained— amongst radio-friendly pop tracks and love songs— strong criticism of corporate America and modern culture. Aside from Alexander, the only other permanent member of the band was keyboardist and former child actress Danielle Brisebois. The remainder of the line-up was a fluctuating one revolving around the two of them, with the goal being to bring in a variety of musicians from many genres.

The band is best known for their debut single, titled "You Get What You Give", which became a top 5 hit in the United Kingdom and has garnered major U.S. airplay for years. The song's celebrity-dissing lyrics at its end provided a minor a spectacle, with Alexander saying that the media misunderstood the meaning. Despite the song's radical messages, anti-materialistic as well as pro-youth, it's ironically been used in many films and even a famous advertising spot.

Tired of touring and promotional interviews, with the group becoming more and more commercialized, Alexander disbanded the group in mid 1999 before the release of their second single, titled "Someday We'll Know". He has successfully focus on writing and producing songs for other artists, winning a Grammy award for his talents. Consequently, the stunning "Someday We'll Know" received little attention in most countries. The band is widely considered a "one-hit-wonder".

This whole record was great, I'm glad I bought it at the time, back when you'd hear a single you liked and go pick up the record, otherwise I probably would have written them off as one hit wonders like most people did. "I Hope I Didn't Just Give Away the Ending" is one of my favorites, very dark lyrically but also funny at moments

I absolutely adore this album. It’s intense but fun. There are delicious sounds, especially guitars, perfectly placed all over. I happen to love the timbre and range of Alexander’s voice. I like Danielle’s too.
Very personal but relatable lyrics. Just a great combo of lyrics, music, and production.

If I had five albums for a desert album, this is one.

"You Get What You Give" still makes me believe in myself, as it did when I first heard it. There was a DJ on Miami's Y-100 who played it almost every night; he died of cancer at 35 not much later and I think about how that song must have have helped him too.

OMG what an ending to the story, what an incredible story arc. Finding a meaning greater then himself leads to his dreams coming true, but by the end he's used by the most infamous crime family as a novelty act. So sad.

The irony is that once You Get What Tou Give came out, he started acting just like those celebrities he called out, only without actually having achieved anything but a haphazard album with awful lyrics and a handful of otherwise great songs. He didn't do anything to fight against that sort of culture. He called attention to it, idolized it, and when he didn't get it, became a poser instead. He wanted to have his cake and eat it too.

I can not praise that debut album enough “Maybe You’ve Been Brainwashed Too” is such a truly remarkable album every track is really good (Gregg Alexander is a musical genius) it’s poetic there was only one New Radicals album in many ways that makes it so much more special! 1. Gregg is a smart man for pulling the plug before it became the alpha/omega of his existence.
2. He got to meet Prince & George Michael ... good for him.
3. He was totally right about people paying more attention to celebrity name dropping/bashing than the important issues. That said "You Get What You Give" is still a must on any 90's themed playlists.
4. Trivia bit here. Gregg Alexander's birthday was the day of the Kent State Shootings (May 4, 1970).

I think those last lines about celebrities was stupid. I think it’s brilliant because we’re still here talking about it which was probably the point. But at it’s core it made no sense. Hanson? Rick Nowels. The vocalist and songwriter of New Radicals showed a demo to Rick in the 80s and got a contract from A&M. Rick ended up being the producer of Gregg's two (failed) records. He hit the jackpot in 98.

I first heard the song "you get what you give" when I was working for Greenpeace and the office manager played the song for me DURING my interview and told me that the song was a huge inspiration for him. I immediately loved the song, it's a bouncy kind of cheerful song but also so beautiful that it almost brought me to tears - especially in the context of what we were doing because I knew that it was absolutely true. You only get what you give.

All of these years later that song is still just as relevant now as it was then. Actually I think it's gotten MORE relevant now that we're surrounded by this Millennial culture (and especially Generation Z'rs) that are so shallow, lazy, obsessed with fame but don't want to work for it; are always looking for a shortcut. There are no cheat codes for success, you have to work hard for it. It's like they say 10% inspiration and 90% perspiration is what leads to success. You only get out of life what you're willing to give. And when you die it isn't going to matter what you collected; what you took from others, the only thing that matters is what you GAVE and how much you contributed to improving the quality of life for others. Your life will be over before you know it and if you never did anything for the benefit of others - your life didn't matter.
