The Rollies, misalnya A. Riyanto, Titiek Puspa, Johannes Purba, Antonius.

The lyrics to "Donna" by New Rollies convey a profound sense of infatuation and longing. The repetition of the name "Donna" establishes a personal connection between the singer and the subject of their affection. The phrase "kau sayangku," which translates to "you are my love," highlights the singer's intense feelings, portraying Donna as not just an object of affection but as an essential part of the singer's emotional landscape. The imagery of her smile, described as capable of making the singer "mabuk cinta" (intoxicated by love), illustrates the intoxicating nature of love and attraction. It suggests that her mere presence and happiness evoke a powerful, almost euphoric response, causing the singer to feel "terlena," or entranced, indicating a state of blissful surrender to these emotions.
As the song progresses, the dynamic of communication—or, more accurately, the lack thereof—comes into focus. The lines "Donna kau membisu" (Donna, you are silent) reveal the tension inherent in unreciprocated feelings. The singer's attempts to express their love are met with silence, leading to feelings of uncertainty and frustration. This depiction of one-sided love effectively captures the emotional turmoil that can accompany such experiences. The desire for confirmation or rejection becomes crucial for the singer, as they express a yearning to understand Donna's feelings. This longing for clarity is emphasized through the refrain, which poses the questions of whether she accepts or rejects their love, highlighting a fundamental desire for reciprocity in relationships.
The repetitiveness of "coba"—meaning "try"—serves as a chorus that amplifies the singer's desperation and eagerness. It emphasizes the hopes and fears associated with revealing one’s emotions. In many ways, the requests for her to communicate her feelings reflect an internal struggle: the desire to break through that silence, to transform hesitant hopes into a tangible reality. It reveals the singer's vulnerability and willingness to take risks for love, but it also acknowledges the possibility of rejection, adding complexity to their emotional state. This duality encapsulates the anxiety and excitement found in romantic pursuits, where the potential for deep connection coexists with the threat of heartbreak.
Ultimately, the repeated motifs of being "mabuk cinta" and "terlena" at the end of the song encapsulate a cyclical experience of love—one that is both intoxicating and disorienting. The refrain suggests that despite the uncertainty and the silence, the singer remains entrapped by their feelings for Donna. This lingering sense of infatuation overrides the angst of unclear communication, underscoring the compelling nature of love's pull. The conclusion reinforces the notion that, regardless of the outcome of their unexpressed feelings, the experience of love itself can be a bewitching journey. In this sense, the song captures the essence of romantic yearning, where hope and desire often intertwine with moments of doubt and longing.
