Cosmia
Newsom Joanna Lyrics

When you ate I saw your eyelashes
Saw them shake like wind on rushes
In the corn field when she called me
Moths surround me, thought they'd drown me
And I miss your precious heart
Dried rose petal, red brown circles
Framed your eyes and stained your knuckles
Dried rose petal, red brown circles
Framed your eyes and stained your knuckles
And all those lonely nights down by the river
Brought me bread and water, water in
But though I tried so hard my little darling
I couldn't keep the night from coming in
And all those lonely nights down by the river
I was brought my bread and water by the kith and the kin
Now in the quiet hour when I am sleepin'
I cannot keep the night from comin' in
Why've you gone away
Gone away again
I'll sleep through the rest of my days
If you've gone away again
I sleep through the rest of my days
And I sleep through the rest of my days
And I sleep through the rest of my days
Why've you gone away, away
Seven suns, seven suns
Away, away, away, away
Can you hear me, will you listen
Don't come near me, don't go missing
In the lissome light of evening
Help me, Cosmia, I'm grieving
And all those lonely nights down by the river
Brought me bread and water, water in
But though I tried so hard my little darling
I couldn't keep the night from coming in
And all those lonely nights down by the river
I was brought my bread and water by the kith and the kin
Now in the quiet hour when I am sleepin'
I cannot keep the night from comin' in
Beneath the porch light we've all been circling
Beat our dust hearts, singe our flour wings
But in the corner, something is happening
Wild Cosmia, what have you seen
Water were your limbs, and the fire was her hair
And then the moonlight caught your eye
And you rose through the air
Well, if you've seen true light, then this is my prayer
Will you call me when you get there
And I miss your precious heart
And miss, and miss, and miss
And miss, and miss, and miss, and miss, and miss your heart
But release your precious heart
To its feast, for precious hearts
In the song Cosmia, Joanna Newsom paints a vivid picture of a longing for a lost love. The song is filled with stunning metaphors and poetic imagery. Newsom uses the natural world to evoke a sense of loneliness and desperation, illustrating how the beauty of nature can be both alluring and terrifying.
In the opening verse, Newsom describes how she sees the eyelashes of her lover shake like wind on rushes as they eat. The imagery creates a sense of intimacy between the two characters. However, the moth circling around them signal that danger looms. Newsom is haunted by the loss of her lover, reflected in the refrain "And I miss your precious heart." Throughout the song, she describes how the dried rose petals have stained the knuckles of her lover's hands, and how all the lonely nights down by the river, where she was brought bread and water by the kith and the kin, couldn't keep the night from coming in. She ends with a haunting image of Cosmia rising through the air, surrounded by water and fire. Newsom is left to wonder if, having seen true light, Cosmia will call her when she gets there.
Cosmia is a beautiful and haunting song that showcases Joanna Newsom's unique voice and lyrical talent. The song is filled with stunning imagery and metaphors that allude to the fleeting nature of love and the beauty of the natural world.

When you ate I saw your eyelashes
I observed your eyelashes shake like wind on rushes when you ate
Saw them shake like wind on rushes
I saw your eyelashes shake rapidly
In the corn field when she called me
In the corn field when I was summoned
Moths surround me, thought they'd drown me
Moths enveloped me, making me feel overwhelmed
And I miss your precious heart
I long for your precious heart
Dried rose petal, red brown circles
Reddish-brown circles of dried rose petals
Framed your eyes and stained your knuckles
Highlighted your eyes and colored your knuckles
And all those lonely nights down by the river
All those solitary nights spent beside the river
Brought me bread and water, water in
Provided me with bread and water, often supplemented with water
But though I tried so hard my little darling
Despite my best efforts, my dear
I couldn't keep the night from coming in
I could not hold back the darkness
Now in the quiet hour when I am sleepin'
During the peaceful hour when I sleep
Why've you gone away
Why have you departed
I'll sleep through the rest of my days
I'll slumber for the remainder of my life
Seven suns, seven suns
Seven severances, seven severances
Can you hear me, will you listen
Can you hear my voice, will you heed it
Don't come near me, don't go missing
Don't come close, don't disappear
In the lissome light of evening
In the flexible, graceful light of evening
Help me, Cosmia, I'm grieving
Assist me, Cosmia, I am mourning
Beneath the porch light we've all been circling
We've all been revolving under the porch light
Beat our dust hearts, singe our flour wings
We thump our dusty hearts, scorch our flour wings
But in the corner, something is happening
However, something is occurring in the corner
Wild Cosmia, what have you seen
Untamed Cosmia, what have you witnessed
Water were your limbs, and the fire was her hair
Your limbs were fluid, and her hair was ablaze
And then the moonlight caught your eye
Then the moonlight captured your attention
And you rose through the air
And you ascended into the air
Well, if you've seen true light, then this is my prayer
If you've experienced the actual light, then this is my request
Will you call me when you get there
Can you phone me when you arrive
But release your precious heart
However, you should surrender your precious heart
To its feast, for precious hearts
To satiate it, since it is a precious heart

4 or 5 years ago we had this summer of insane thunderstorms and every time we had one I would sit on the porch with some hot rooibos tea and listen to this album while I watched the lightning basically envelop my house and it was one of the most relaxing and enjoyable times of my entire life. If you’re reading this, take this song outside and watch the next thunderstorm that passes through. You’ll be in awe of the splendor of the natural world and so satisfied with your place in it.
@TehStrickland
Wonderful advice! I've pinned this so more will see :)
On a similar note, I used to take a book out to a local stream and sit on the bank to read with this album playing in my headphones. I can't hear these songs or think about those books without recalling the sincere inner peace those times brought me.

@@TehStrickland I live in a pretty ghetto area of Florida so there's no nice majestic areas down here. But i plan on going down to the canals behind the neighborhood to listen to this album to be with nature
@TehStrickland
@@ladyheroin.v4143 Greetings fellow Floridian :D
I know that feeling. I've been all over this state, and in some parts there's just nothing nice looking... but there are some gems around. Best of luck at the canals, I hope it brings tranquility.

The moment at 6:22 when the harp goes faster as she sings "i miss" FUCKING KILLS ME my heart stops beating to hear it
@ryanhomcy7759
The strings accenting "miss" over and over near the end make an already extremely moving song completely overwhelming.
