I saw the Count play with his full band at Eastland Mall in the summer of '72. He started at 9 pm (store closing hours) & went on past midnight. Before the concert I saw a man eating an ice cream relaxing on a park bench. He looked awfully familiar. I said to him "Count?". He sheepishly nodded. We shook hands & I thanked him for all the fantastic music over the years. What a pleasant man. Great lifetime experience that i will never forget.

Back in 1959 i was with the USAF stationed at Otis AFB at Falmouth Mass. The leader of the Air Force Base Band gave me a call ( no idea how he got my number ) asking if i would like to play with the band on the upcoming Sunday afternoon at the Officer's Club. About 12 piece band at least. THIS is the first song we were going to play, INCLUDING that piano-solo introduction. ( that was me ) I had a few accordion lessons when i was 13-14 years old, maybe a year total. Luckily i had played with the USAF base band while i was up in Iceland, so i guess i got a little more "training' so to speak. Anywho, so i showed up that Sunday got acquainted and was given the music "charts", with this one sitting right on TOP of the rest. NOT being familiar at all with the song, i opened the music and saw, what looked like to me, "hundreds of notes" all over the place, looked like a horde of little gnats or something. YIKES!! All i could do is prepare myself and "after the leader's count, i went for broke, realizing just one thing.........................I knew it was the key of b-flat and to just keep going, no matter what. After what seemed like an eternity, the rest of the band jumped in. That was a relief. LOL So, to make a long story "short", i made it through the rest of the afternoon with the band.........about 1 1/2 hours. One helluva experience i'll NEVER forget. LOL

I get that Chuck. In the late fifties I was privileged to rehearse with a local dance band, twelve piece, Jimmy Lally arrangements, and was STUNNED by the overall effect of the sound when played by a band with a good leader, and guided by disciplined practice.

Freddie Green played guitar with Basie for nigh on 50 years and never once played a solo. Even without that, he is one of the 5 most influential guitarists ever. Basie's piano is remakrbalebecaus eh keeps it so simple, so close to the bone , so straight from the blues - it really goes for the gut.

Awesome,I actually shook his hand and got his and some of the band members autographs at there 1970/71 Perth Concert at Subiaco Oval,I was 10 years old my 90 years young dad n my 87 years young mum took me to the show.

Now THESE were musicians! Able to sight-read, improvise on rather complicated chord progressions, having to tour all over hell's half-acre to the next job on a BUS, it was the Great Depression era, and then pre-WWII... Having to compose and keep "head arrangements" memorized, being able to transpose to a different key when required (the gigantic pianos on site were not always up to concert standards, out of tune, missing keys, etc.) ... NO electronics for synthesizers, or electric pianos, guitars... maybe there was a singer's microphone.
This is very sophisticated stuff, even for a conservatory-trained musician! To be able to choose from such a wealth of capable musicians must have been quite a chore, and to keep these young guys in line required quite a bit of tact and diplomacy. Count Basie is my favorite. He may be gone, but he was a gentleman, understated, but wholly capable of producing these miracles.
Compare this to today's idiotic "musicians" with their a cappella singing, not being able to play an instrument in many cases, no knowledge of music history, not being able to improvise, goofy, effeminate hair-dos... there is no comparison.

Yeah, it's true though, I'm a bass player and I love Jazz, I know this song because Page on bass does some sweet chromatic walks (big innovation to walking bass at the time), but even I'm turned off by the production on old recordings, I want to hear what everyone's doing because I know they're all doing something great, but I can only hear a big mess of sound on each beat and crackly horns with a to be fair quite nice sounding keys, so Basie always sounds good himself. And it all sounds awesome! But I can see why young people would find it hard to search for the beauty in it, when these days recordings are immense and perfect recreations like the band is right in front of you.
