This Town
Niall Horan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Yesterday I thought I saw your shadow running round
It's funny how things never change in this old town
So far from the stars

And I want to tell you everything
The words I never got to say the first time around
And I remember everything
From when we were the children playing in this fairground
Wish I was there with you now
Wish I was there with you now

If the whole world was watching I'd still dance with you
Drive highways and byways to be there with you
Over and over the only truth
Everything comes back to you

I saw that you moved on with someone new
In the pub that we met he's got his arms around you
It's so hard
So hard

And I want to tell you everything
The words I never got to say the first time around
And I remember everything
From when we were the children playing in this fairground
Wish I was there with you now
Wish I was there with you now

Everything comes back to you
If the whole world was watching I'd still dance with you
Drive highways and byways to be there with you
Over and over the only truth

Everything comes back to you
Everything comes back to you

For anyone who reads this, let me tell you a story.

I've sinced moved on, but when I heard this song, I had a girl on my mind. And I always listened to it.

She was really something. She was beautiful, funny, smart, and loved music. She had this magic that surrounded her. I don't know if I loved her, but man, I had it bad.

I wasn't much to look at then, you know, mid-puberty and all. I'm still young. But I had hope that just maybe, just maybe she could like a guy like me.

We were already friends, and we got along well. As I spent time with her, I realized "Wow. I like this girl."

And yeah, it was an awesome feeling. Every day I didn't see her felt long, and every day I did felt too fast. I dreamed of dancing, and the usual things a teenage boy dreams of. Movies, parties, drive through the city. I was stuck in my own head. I had even bought her a necklace with her zodiac sign on it for her birthday. I put the necklace in a little brown bag with all these neat treats for her to snack on. It sat on my counter for days before I saw her again. I dreamt of what I'd do when I gave it to her. And it wasn't long before I was able to.

Which is why I didn't see this coming.

As it turned out, everything I dreamed of was fated to be just that, a dream. I never asked her out, never had the opportunity to be rejected.

I just saw her with another guy. I didn't cry, I didn't scream. I just was. It was a mix of shock and sadness, I didn't know what to feel.

I don't think she ever wore that necklace, and I wouldn't expect her to, considering her relationship. I'm happy to say we're still friends to this day.

But I sometimes think back to how I felt around her. The fire that burned inside me then. The naiveté I had.

And I gotta say, some part of me kinda misses it.
