This restoration is complete
Dirty dusty something must be underneath
So I scrape and I scuff
Though it's never quite enough
I'm starting to see me finally
A gallery of paintings new and paintings old
Every layer of mine hides a lovely design
It might take a little patience
It might take a little time
But you called me beautiful
When you saw my shame
And you placed me on the wall
Anyway
You who have begun this work will someday see
A portrait of the holiness you meant for me
So I polish and shine
til it's easier to find even an outline of mine
But you called me beautiful
When you saw my shame
And you placed me on the wall
Anyway
Anyway
And you placed me on the wall
Anyway
The song 'Anyway' by Nichole Nordeman is a soulful reflection on the process of self-discovery and finding one's own inner beauty. The song begins with the words 'Bless the day, This restoration is complete', which indicate that the singer has finally found herself and is now ready to embrace her true self. The line 'Dirty dusty something must be underneath' suggests that she has been covering up her true self for a long time but is now ready to confront it.
Further, the singer acknowledges that her journey towards self-discovery has been arduous and not without its share of difficulties. She admits to scraping and scuffing, but it's never quite enough to get to the core. Despite that, she is beginning to see herself after a long time- 'I'm starting to see me finally'. The lyrics are an honest and vulnerable expression of the singer's struggles with accepting herself entirely.
The chorus of the song is the heart of its message. It talks about how someone who saw her for who she was, saw through her shame and still thought she was beautiful. This acceptance gave her the strength to continue on her journey of self-improvement regardless of how hard it was. In the end, it is revealed that one day, when the work on her is complete, she will become a portrait of holiness that was meant for her all along.
