Never thought that we would meet so soon
Never thought I?d bundle up in June
Funny how the fog rolls
Funnier that I?d know who to blame
Never thought I?d have to own this pain
If all that's good and true comes from heaven
And I'm sayin?
Why, why, why, why?
I'm shakin? a fist in the dark
And I'm askin?
Why, why, why, why?
Why does it keep getting harder to say thanks?
Tell me what's a girl to do
Even fields of flowers
Dressing in their best because of You
Knowing they are blessed to be in bloom
But what about November
When the air is cold and wet winds blow
Do they understand why they can't grow?
Why, why, why, why?
I'm shakin? a fist in the dark
And I'm askin?
Why, why, why, why?
Why does it keep getting harder to say, to say, to say, to say thanks?
And I could not pretend to know the difference
Between the storms you send and those I find
And I'm sayin?
Why, why, why, why?
I'm shakin? a fist in the dark
And I'm askin?
Why, why, why, why?
Tell me what's a girl to do
I'm shakin? a fist in the dark
And I'm askin?
Why, why, why, why?
Why does it keep getting harder
And I'm sayin?
Why, why?
Why, why, why, why?
Why does it keep getting harder to say thanks?
To say thanks
Why, why, why, why?
Why, why, why, why, why?
The song "To Say Thanks" by Nichole Nordeman begins with the singer seeing the dark clouds and feeling discomfort in bundling up in June. The fog represents the problems of life which the singer never expected to encounter. She never thought she would have to own the pain that came along with these responsibilities. The singer ponders about the nature of good and true things coming from heaven, which prompts her to question what one should do when it rains.
The second verse talks about how flowers dress in their best to bless people, and the singer wonders if they still understand why they cannot grow in November when the air is wet and cold. The chorus repeats the same question, "why does it keep getting harder to say thanks?" The singer questions the difference between the storms sent by God and those we bring upon ourselves. In the end, she expresses her confusion and frustration over the difficulties life brings.
It's an empowering anthem that encourages listeners not to give up on gratitude even when things become challenging. It is a reminder that saying thanks should be a grateful response to life, regardless of the circumstances.
