Cold Water
Nicholson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She put on her coat and walked out the door
Said "I don't need this anymore"
It's quarter to ten, and he's at the table
But she ain't there and he ain't able
He trudges through

Cold, cold waters
Again
Again, Again

Shitty motel, no bedside table
Where will she go, and is she stable?

It's quarter to twelve, it's getting late
Tomorrow will be a brighter day

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Nicholson's song Cold Water present a story of a failed relationship that is falling apart. The song begins with a woman putting on her coat and leaving her partner. She expresses that she does not need the relationship anymore. Despite it being quarter to ten, her partner is at the table, yet she's not there, and he's unable to do anything about it. He is left to trudge through his feelings and emotions alone.

The central theme of the song is the coldness of the water that the couple was wading through in their relationship. This "Cold, cold water" represents the emptiness and isolation that lies between them. The lyrics suggest that the couple is staying in a crappy motel with no bedside table, a metaphor for how uncomfortable and unstable their relationship has become. It's unclear where the woman has gone, and it's questioned whether she is stable.

The song's chorus repeats the phrase "cold, cold waters," serving as an ongoing reminder of the couple's troubles. The lyrics' concluding lines imply hope for a fresh start, with the notion that "Tomorrow will be a brighter day."

Overall, Nicholson's "Cold Water" is a song that characterizes the desperation and loneliness that can come from a failed relationship, with a glimmer of hope that the future will be better.

It was 2015 and I was at NH7 Weekender music festival. Nicholson was on stage and I had only heard his song For What II which I was in love with, and still am. They had a technical problem, and after spending some trying to sort it out, Nicholson decided to improvise and play Cold Waters. Just him and his piano while rest of the band figures out the problem. Still get goosebumps remembering that performance. One of the most magical experiences in my life...

HI FIVE! I discovered him at the same gig. What a phenomenal performance. The whole vibe, the venue and the slight buzz amplified the magic.

If you get an opportunity, see him live.
These days he's playing as Lands Lands but I don't know if he's touring. I found him by accident at one of my past Weekenders, we were literally passing time, waiting for our next favorite act. Slightly drunk, great vibe. His music felt heavenly, been a fan since. Sohrab is a very down to earth guy as well.

Note: I see a lot of other people had the same experience :D.

I remember seeing Nicholson live in Bacardi NH7, I was high and his music just made the whole experience out of this world, I hope I'll be seeing them again this year

@Ryan Shullai I don't remember, I think it was Laxmi Lawns, the original venue in Magarpatta. I have been to 7 weekenders since 2013, have lost track of the venues.
