Before they started as a duo in 2006, Nick and Simon played in the band of Jan Smit. Simon Keizer is the composer of some of Jan Smit's songs, including the top 3 hitsingle "Laura".
Nick & Simon also participated in the Dutch Pop 'Idols'. Nick reached the eleventh position and Simon had to leave in the qualifying rounds. After that adventure they started working on their own repertoire.
In 2006 their first self-titled album was released, which made it straight into the top 10 in the charts in the first week.
After the success of the first album, they came with a new album "Vandaag". This album became platina and had the hitsingles "Kijk Omhoog", "Pak maar mijn Hand", "Rosanne" and "Hoe Lang". Rosanne even reached the top of the Sterren.nl top 100 of 2008. In 2008 they also had a theater tour which was a big success. In 2009 they will come with a new single "Vallende Sterren" and in February 2009 they will release their third album "Luister". And they are also planning on a new theater tour.
Oostenwind
Nick & Simon Lyrics

Het schijnt dat juli hier gister was
Maar nu is het strand verlaten
Het is snijdend koud
Niemand die ziet wat ik bij me houd
En liever voor me houd
Over mijn leven waait een oostenwind
Hij hielp me vooruit
Vergetelheid
Over mijn leven waait een oostenwind
Oktober november zie ik somber in
Hij hielp me vooruit
Maar plotseling
Keerde hij zich tegen mij
Een oostenwind
Het vlakke land (vlakke land)
Het zachte zand (zachte zand)
Van hier naar daar
Onbegaanbaar
Over mijn leven waait een oostenwind
Oktober november zie ik somber in
Hij hielp me vooruit
Maar plotseling
Keerde hij zich tegen mij
Een oostenwind
The lyrics to Nick & Simon's song "Oostenwind" describe a feeling of discontent and unease in life. The opening lines express a desire to not get accustomed to the winter jacket, symbolizing a reluctance to adapt or accept undesirable circumstances. The mention of July being just yesterday highlights the fleeting nature of time and how quickly things can change.
The deserted beach and the cutting cold represent a sense of isolation and loneliness. The singer feels ignored as no one sees or understands what they are holding onto and would rather keep it to themselves. It may refer to personal struggles or emotional baggage that the person is dealing with.
The chorus introduces the concept of an "oostenwind" or an east wind blowing over one's life. This wind seems to metaphorically represent a difficult phase or a challenging situation that one encounters during October and November, typically colder months in the Netherlands. At first, it appeared to help the singer move forward, but suddenly turned against them, leaving them feeling betrayed or abandoned.
As the song progresses, the singer reflects on how they have been letting go of the sand between their fingers too late, indicating a delay in addressing their worries or concerns. However, now they see that these worries were insignificant or only a minor issue, as the wind has blown them away, taking them to the past and leaving them in oblivion.
The bridge emphasizes the difficulty of navigating the flat land and the soft sand, suggesting that the path forward is challenging and uncertain. The repetition of the phrase "over mijn leven waait een oostenwind" reinforces the idea that this east wind is blowing over their entire life, affecting their outlook on the months of October and November, which they perceive as gloomy or bleak.
Overall, "Oostenwind" conveys a sense of disillusionment, dealing with unexpected setbacks, and the struggle to find direction and hope during difficult times. The lyrics capture the emotional journey of the singer as they navigate through personal challenges and the changing seasons of life.
