Road
Nick Drake Lyrics

You can say the sun is shining if you really want to
I can see the moon and it seems so clear
You can take the road that takes you to the stars now
I can take a road that'll see me through
I can take a road that'll see me through.

You can take a road that takes you to the stars now
I can take a road that'll see me through
I can take a road that'll see me through
I can take a road that'll see me through.

He was only mid twenties and so fluent. Remarkable in what sounds like a very complex fingerpicking pattern and unusual key signature. It seems the meter is such too. I'm only amateur, but I strive to do as he does so well and that's the way he uses the three bass strings and the three treble strings (I don't know my terminology ha) where the way he's picking he makes his six string guitar sound like two instruments. I see a "road" with this too, one that goes to austere places of mystery. Also his old dead sounding strings make his guitar sound like a foreign instrument to me too, like some kind of rare and unusual instrument one might find in some far-flung corner of the world like "Outer Mongolia" on some "silk road" journey, or like for Nick, find while dancing along a string of stars. It even takes me to an evening in 1973 so vivid, back in my Job Corps days in the Cascade Mountains of Oregon. It was a trying time for me, yet great moments can be found anywhere. I forgot what indigenous nation he was from, I think Apache, from the Southwest, comes into my mindscape on Nicke's tune. We were hanging out in this kind of open porch area of the corpsmen dorms where high in the mountains the stars really come out. He wore a broad white head band that tied back with long ends like you see with Japanese Martial Arts people, only it was just the way he was. He was excited to ask me, "What is it you really yearn for in life?" I fumbled with my words, didn't know how to answer. It was like he could hardly wait to say, "My life wish is to walk the stars." So Nick's song has taken me there. Thanks to "Nick Drake - Topic" too for taking the time to post this! I don't know the recording world, but didn't Joe Boyd have something to do with this album too, with recording it etc. ?

all this time I thought it was
"You can see the sun is shining if you have a window"

I still sing it that way time to time :)
