I Don't Know
Nick Hakim Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Here's a toast to you, it's been too long
We'll drink until the night is gone
Where did you go?
What have you seen?
And over there, there's an air taste differently?
Where did you go?
Where did you go?
I don't know
Where did you go?
Where did you go?
I don't know. I don't know
But I know you're watching over me,
You help us through the good and through the pain we breathe
One day we'll wake up from this crazy dream,
And we'll meet again after my lights dim out,
And I'll be wondering
Where will we go?
Where will we go?
I don't know
Where will we go?
Where will we go?
I don't know. I don't know
Where will we go?
Where will we go?
I don't know
Where will we go?

Where will we go?
I don't know. I don't know

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Nick Hakim's song "I Don't Know" are filled with emotional complexity and uncertainty. The song seems to be addressing a person who has disappeared from the singer's life for some time. The singer isn't sure where the person went or what they've experienced since their departure. This sense of confusion is amplified by the line, "And over there, there's an air taste differently?" which seems to allude to a change in atmosphere or environment. Despite all of this, the singer maintains a sense of optimism that the person is still watching over them and helping them through difficult times. This belief is ultimately what spurs the singer to wonder where they will go after their time on earth is over.

In many ways, "I Don't Know" is a tribute to the power of human connection and the way that those who leave our lives continue to shape us. Even though the singer doesn't know where their loved one has gone or where they themselves will go after death, they are comforted by the idea that they will meet again at some point. This sense of faith in the afterlife provides a sense of closure and hope that can be difficult to find in the face of loss.

Overall, "I Don't Know" is a powerful and emotive song that speaks to the complexities of grief and the importance of holding onto hope in the face of uncertainty.

I used to listen to this song when I had an existensial contemplation that was 5 years back. I would go to the roof top alone, gazing at the stars, the moon and the night sky contemplating on what am I in this world for. And now I am back at it again. 😃

When the chorus comes in I feel like I’m flying and falling at the same time, great song
