Let the feeling come and take hold
It's never easy waiting for it to unfold
It takes strength to let it show,
Let the feeling out and open up
Your arms and let the world into your soul
But it's harder when you know your right, but you can't speak your mind
Cus' you're too scared to fight
And everybody thinks your weak,
But it takes more strength than they will ever know
To stand and face the world and never let it show
CHORUS
So we may think we have the right
To say everything we think, and think everything's all right
It's not right. Oh no. It's not right
So you try to play the fool
Try to hide from all the ridicule
That takes the wind out of the sails that carry you
And when you try to find your feet,
It seems there's always someone waiting there
To push you into the arms of defeat.
You' gotta wonder "what's the point?"
Of even trying to raise your voice
If all it seems to do is leave you facing more and more abuse
And so you learn to hold your peace
And learn turn the other cheek,
Until the time is right, you hold your breath and long for the release
CHORUS
So we may think we have the right
To say everything we think, and think everything's all right
But its not right oh no,
Because sticks and stones can break you,
But words can change your life
It's not right. Oh no. It's not right
But see it's easy being right
When you think you're wrong but everyone around you
Keeps on giving you the strength to prove them right.
The lyrics of Nick Hall's song Sticks and Stones deal with the difficult task of standing up for oneself and expressing one's true feelings in the face of ridicule and abuse. The first verse acknowledges that it takes time and strength to allow one's true emotions to show and to open up to the world, but it's never easy to do so. This idea is echoed in the second verse, where the lyrics suggest that it's even harder to stay silent when you know you're right but are scared to speak your mind, and everyone thinks you're weak for staying quiet.
The chorus warns against the danger of speaking without thinking and believing that everything's all right, suggesting that this kind of thoughtless behavior can cause harm to others. The final verse acknowledges that it's tempting to try to hide from ridicule and abuse by playing the fool, but this doesn't lead to real solutions or empowerment. Instead, the lyrics encourage the listener to hold their peace and turn the other cheek until the time is right to speak up and effect change. The final line of the chorus suggests that words have the power to change our lives, for better or worse, highlighting the importance of thoughtful, empathetic communication.

It requires time for people to see who you really are
Let the feeling come and take hold
Allow your emotions to become a part of you
It's never easy waiting for it to unfold
Waiting for things to happen can be difficult
It takes strength to let it show,
It takes courage to show your true self
Let the feeling out and open up
Express your emotions and let others see you
Your arms and let the world into your soul
Be vulnerable and allow others to connect with you on a deeper level
It's never easy being wrong
Admitting fault can be hard
But it's harder when you know your right, but you can't speak your mind
It's more difficult to keep quiet when you know you're right
Cus' you're too scared to fight
You're afraid to stand up for yourself
And everybody thinks your weak,
Others perceive you as powerless
But it takes more strength than they will ever know
It actually requires a lot of courage to face the world
To stand and face the world and never let it show
To be strong and not let others see your vulnerabilities
So we may think we have the right
We may believe that we have the privilege
To say everything we think, and think everything's all right
To say whatever is on our minds without repercussions
It's not right. Oh no. It's not right
However, this is not acceptable
So you try to play the fool
You pretend to be someone you're not
Try to hide from all the ridicule
Avoiding insults and teasing
That takes the wind out of the sails that carry you
Losing your motivation due to negative comments
And when you try to find your feet,
When you try to find your footing again
It seems there's always someone waiting there
Someone is always ready to bring you down
To push you into the arms of defeat.
To make you feel defeated
You' gotta wonder "what's the point?"
You start to question why you're trying
Of even trying to raise your voice
Of attempting to speak up
If all it seems to do is leave you facing more and more abuse
If speaking up only leads to more mistreatment
And so you learn to hold your peace
You start to keep quiet
And learn turn the other cheek,
You learn to ignore the hurtful things said to you
Until the time is right, you hold your breath and long for the release
You wait for the right moment to express yourself
Because sticks and stones can break you,
Physical harm can damage you
But words can change your life
Verbal abuse can be just as harmful
But see it's easy being right
It's simple to believe you are correct
When you think you're wrong but everyone around you
Even if you don't think you're right
Keeps on giving you the strength to prove them right.
Others supporting you can give you the confidence to succeed
