Remembering

And I gon' help my family and hold this in your harmony
Ya'll hit me with this melody, I'm calling for your help you see
And keeping us alive
Growing with the plants at night, helping us survive
Knowing who we are inside
I recall my father, the one who I came after
Who shepherded my laughter and washed me in the bathtub
Oh, when I was a boy
He was devoted to my joy, when I was a boy
He was a lovely young dad in the corduroys
Now home again, my friend again
I'm glad you're on the mend again
Remembering you're ill again and here we have within again

Now this is how it is
And this is how it's always been now, whether we forget
Or whether we keep remembering
Remembering
Remembering

Said to me or leant to me, or somebody say meant to be
Oh, I believe in an energy, it's looking through my eyes you see
And listening through my ears
Oh, what does it hear? Oh yeah
Self does it hear and everything and everywhere

Now yes I am an energy that's feeling through my touch you see
Then nothing is too much for me
I'm infinitely such you see and in this be the same
After all our different names, in this ill the same
Whang and whang and whanging again
Now yes, you are an energy that's feeding through your touch you see Saying nothing is too much for me
I'm infinitely such you see

And this is how it is
And this is how it's always been now, whether we forget
Or whether we keep remembering
Remembering
Remembering

I'm gon' help my family and hold this in your harmony
Ya'll hit me with this melody
I'm calling for your help you see (remembering)
Keeping us alive
Growing with the plants at night, helping us survive
Knowing who we are inside (remembering)
Home again, my friend again
I'm glad you're on the mend again
Remembering you're ill again and here we have within again (remembering)

Now this is how it is
And this is how it's always been now, whether we forget
Or whether we keep remembering

Overall Meaning

In "Remembering," Nick Mulvey reflects on the power of memory and the importance of family. He opens with the lines "And I gon' help my family and hold this in your harmony, Ya'll hit me with this melody, I'm calling for your help you see." His message is that we must hold on to the memories of our loved ones, and in doing so, we can keep them alive. He reflects on his own past, especially his relationship with his father, who "shepherded [his] laughter and washed [him] in the bathtub" when he was a boy. Mulvey's reflections remind him of the joy that his father brought to his childhood, and how it helped shape him into the person he has become. The chorus repeats the idea that memory is vital, as it is what makes us who we are.

Mulvey then expands on the concept of memory in a more spiritual sense. He believes that we are all connected as energies, looking through his eyes and listening through his ears. He feels infinity in himself and everyone else, beyond our different names. He sings, "Now yes, you are an energy that's feeding through your touch you see Saying nothing is too much for me, I'm infinitely such you see." Mulvey suggests that we are all part of something bigger than ourselves, and that memory can help connect us to the collective consciousness.

In the final verse, Mulvey ties the various threads of memory, family, and spirituality together. He repeats the importance of holding onto memories and helping each other, which will keep us growing and surviving together. He sings, "Home again, my friend again, I'm glad you're on the mend again, Remembering you're ill again and here we have within again." Ultimately, Mulvey's message in "Remembering" is one of hope and connection, driven home by the repetition of the chorus: "And this is how it is, And this is how it's always been now, whether we forget or whether we keep remembering."
