It’s so sad how many veterans had to shut themselves down after the war, so much they wouldn’t even speak with their families about it. All my respect and honor to every man, woman, kid that were on those long nights in those bloody years

At a 1970s factory job I met a fine older gent who'd been US infantry in this battle. A few days into it, his squad was ordered to hold a certain small hilltop overlooking an empty snowy field. For three nights young German infantry crossed the open field and tried to take the height, but they were mown down each time. When it was over he and his friends just couldn't believe the piles and number of Germans they had killed and how young they all were. He figured that they had had no choice but suicidal attack, yet he still shook his head in wonder at their bravery, and at the waste.

I grew up on a farm in Southwest Mississippi that was part of Camp Van Dorn. Used to find 30.06 shell casings everywhere and also, Native American spear heads and bird points from some other ancient form of conflict

I wonder if Van Dorn and Union general Bull Nelson drink together in the afterlife?

It’s interesting how the author describes the special training and abilities of the I & R platoon but did not mention how obviously awesome they were at marksmanship.

Amazing story of those men, how they struggled and came out triumphant from that war

These men were truly thr greatest generation. I just retired after 22 years of service and 7 combat deployments. I've had to push myself through some extremely difficult situations, but I wouldn't have made it through this battle. These men were on another level.

That’s an embarrassing story. I entered as a PFC. worked my way up to E5. Went to OCS. On my second tour in Korea fell in love with an enlisted woman. Oopsie. In my arrogant, pigheaded, self aggrandizing logic. I thought certainly a combat veteran infantry officer wouldn’t/couldn’t lose his career if found dating an enlisted female with zero connections to infantry. Long story short; because of my strong career, I was allowed to resign in lieu of courts martial. 12.7 years shot. A career I loved. Gone. Ah, but perhaps the reason was that a few of the officers I served with didn’t make it in future operations. I taught high school in Miami. Then taught 14 years in Vietnam, where I met my wife. Currently I am working for the VA and taking care of my dad. All good. Buying back my military time so a pension, albeit small, awaits in 2.7 years. All the best to you and yours. Continue to speak out for our dear Republic. Enjoy every day.

@Chris WeidnerI appreciate the kind words, especially coming from a Veteran. Thank you. Did you make a career out of it? I've watched you infantry boys do some unbelievable stuff to save a lot of guys like me. Y'all are cut from a different cloth, you have to be to walk into an area knowing damn good and well you're going to experience mortars being dial in on you, rocket attacks, and small arm fire.. with that being said, thank you for your service, Sir.

7. Thank you for your heroic service from an Infantry gulf War 1 vet. All the best to you and yours. And don't sell your self short. I am convinced you would of served honorably and heroically.
