Hayloft
Nickel Creek Lyrics

My daddy's got a gun
My daddy's got a gun
My daddy's got a gun
You better run

My daddy's got a gun
My daddy's got a gun
My daddy's got a gun

It started with the hayloft a-creakin'
Yeah, it just started in the hayloft
With his long johns on, Pop went a-creepin'
Out to the barn, out to the hay

Young lovers and they are not sleeping
Young lovers in the hayloft
With his gun turned on, Pop went a-creepin'
Out to the barn up to the hay

My daddy's got a gun
My daddy's got a gun
My daddy's got a gun
You better run

My daddy's got a gun
My daddy's got a gun
My daddy's got a gun

Hayloft
Hayloft

My daddy's got a gun
My daddy's got a gun
My daddy's got a gun
You better run

My daddy's got a gun
My daddy's got a gun
My daddy's got a gun

It started with the hayloft a-creakin'
Yeah, just started in the hay
With his long johns on, Pop went a-creepin'
Out to the barn, out to the hayloft

Young lovers with their legs tied up in knots
Young lovers with their legs tied up in knots
With his long tall gun, Pop went a-creepin'
To blow their hayloft bedheads straight off

My daddy's got a gun
My daddy's got a gun
My daddy's got a gun
You better run

My daddy's got a gun
My daddy's got a gun
My daddy's got a gun

My daddy's got a gun
My daddy's got a gun
My daddy's got a gun
You better run

My daddy's got a gun

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Hayloft" by Nickel Creek tell the story of a father catching two young lovers in the hayloft with his gun, resulting in a chase. The song starts with the repeated line, "My daddy's got a gun, you better run," which sets the tone for the rest of the song. The story then begins with the hayloft creaking, creating an ominous and foreboding atmosphere. The father, referred to as "Pop," goes to investigate and discovers the young lovers in the hayloft. The father's long gun is pointed at the lovers while he creeps towards them, giving the impression of imminent danger. The lovers' legs are tied up in knots, a metaphor for their complicated entanglement. The father is portrayed as severe and frightening, with the lines "to blow their hayloft bedheads straight off" suggesting a violent intent. The lovers are urged to run, emphasizing the danger they are in and the power the father possesses.

The song portrays several themes, including violence, power, and control. The father's ownership of a gun is connected to masculinity and dominance, with the lyrics framing the father as a threatening figure. The lovers are powerless in the presence of the father with his gun, a weapon that can easily inflict harm. The song also explores the turbulent nature of young love, with the young lovers tangled and tied up, a symbol of their emotional and physical attachment to each other.

Holy shit some of these comments are negative. It's a creative take on a great song. The musicianship is great. I'm a huge Mother Mother fan and a fan of Nickel Creek and Chris Thile. I'm just stoked to see that Mother Mother is getting recognition from other great musicians. It's a bummer to see so much of the fanbase be so negative.

CoralPuppytin

They didn’t credit the original artists, (mother mother was the band who made the song)

Shanannigan

@CoralPuppytin Mother Mother is credited in the description actually.

CoralPuppytin

@Shanannigan didn’t see it my bad it was late at night

They're basically the same song I don't get what all the negativity is about

ThatNotSoAznKid

Personally I prefer the simple manic energy of the original, but this is still a damn good cover. It's always great to hear an artist put its on spin on things while paying respects to the original. Almost everyone I introduce the original to hate it, but this darker rhythmic tone might be more palpable to those people.

deepseasecret

i love both the original and this version so much. they both have their own unique feel to it.
