Fly
Nickelback Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Father, tell me somethin'
Where do bad men go when they die?
And mother says you'll go there but
Wings for her and I and I don't mind
Cause I have always wanted to learn to...
Fly...learn to
Fly...learn to
Fly...learn to
Fly...

Brother, tell me somethin'
If I take this, am I going to die?
And he says no, so then I figure what the hell
I'll try cause it's my life
So light the match and you and I will...

Fly...learn to
Fly...learn to
Fly...learn to
Fly...

'Cause I'm on my hands and knees I've crawled eternity to beg forgiveness
And someday I'll be there I swear to you, God, as my witness
For all the trusts I've broke and, let justice know, it's just that easy
'Cause I'm a liar, I conspired, I'm a liar...

And father tell your son
It's not your gun and bloody hands
Don't hide behind locked doors
In dresser drawers those bullets wait to fly...

Fly...wait to
Fly...wait to
Fly... wait to

Fly...

'Cause I'm on my hands and knees
I've crawled eternity to beg forgiveness
And someday I'll be there I swear to you
God, as my witness
For all the trusts I've broke and
Let justice know, it's just that easy
'Cause I'm a liar, I conspired, I'm a liar...

Overall Meaning

The lyrics in Nickelback's song "Fly" are rich in metaphor and imagery. The song starts with the singer questioning his father about what happens to bad men when they die. His mother answers by saying that bad men go to hell, but she and her son will have wings and fly away. The singer is unfazed by this as he has always wanted to learn to fly. This can be interpreted as the character wanting to escape his present life and circumstances, hoping to transcend it and achieve freedom.

The scene then shifts to the singer talking to his brother about taking a risk that could potentially harm him. His brother responds by saying that he won't die, so he decides to light a match and fly with his brother. This can again be seen as the singer trying to break free from reality and experience something new.

The middle of the song returns to the theme of begging for forgiveness. The singer crawls on his hands and knees, begging for redemption for breaking trusts and conspiring. The line "For all the trusts I've broke and, let justice know, it's just that easy" gives an insight into the character's psyche, showing that he knows his actions are wrong but finds it easy to do them anyway.

The final verse talks about the father telling his son not to hide behind guns and violent means. The singer once again talks about flying, but this time the bullets are waiting to fly. The use of flying here could be seen as a way of escaping the problems that guns and violence can bring. The song ends with the singer admitting to being a liar and a conspirer, once again emphasizing the idea of seeking forgiveness.
