In an recent interview, Kroeger stated one of the guitar riffs had come to him while on tour. He recorded the riff onto his cellphone and sent it to the producer, Mutt Lange, who put a microphone up to his own cellphone and recorded the sent guitar riff. The cellphone recording is the exact same recording used on the album, never being re-recorded in a studio.
Following the song's release onto iTunes, "Something In Your Mouth" rose as high as #28 on the top selling songs, causing it to debut at #96 the following week on the Billboard Hot 100. It is the second song from Dark Horse to chart. The song also debuted at #71 on the Canadian Hot 100 and peaked at #48.
The song debuted at #31 on the Mainstream Rock Chart, over a month before its official add date. It rose to #16 the following week, and climbed into the top ten in its fourth week, still ahead of its official release date. On the March 7th, 2009 issuing of Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart, the single officially topped the chart, becoming Nickelback's seventh career #1 on this format, and their first since "Animals" hit #1 in 2006. The song also at debuted at #40 on the Hot Modern Rock Tracks, and has risen to #21 so far.
