After working as a labourer along with future members of The Gladiators, Thomas's break came with "Run Mr. Nigel Run", produced by Derrick Harriott.[1] This was followed by a successful association with producer Joe Gibbs, with hits following in the form of "God Bless The Children", "Mama's Song", "Rainy Night In Georgia" and "If I Had a Hammer".[1] He broke into the UK Top 10 in 1970 with "Love of the Common People" (later also a top 10 hit for Paul Young), a tour following, after which Thomas decided to stay in the United Kingdom, promoting a compilation of his work with Gibbs, also titled Love of the Common People. This was followed by his self-produced Tell It Like It Is album, featuring the near-hit "Yesterday Man", and the commentary on the lack of airplay for reggae records on Radio 1, "BBC".[1]
Thomas continued recording commercial reggae, working with the likes of Lloyd Charmers. In 1974, he toured the UK backed by the musicians who would later go on to become Misty In Roots.[
Rainy Night In Georgia
Nicky Thomas Lyrics

Tryin' to find a warm place to spend the night
A heavy rain a fallin'
Seems I hear your voice callin'
"It's all right"
A rainy night in Georgia
A rainy night in Georgia
Neon signs a flashin'
Taxi cabs and busses passin' through the night
The distant moanin' of a train
Seems to play a sad refrain to the night
A rainy night in Georgia
A rainy night in Georgia
I believe it's rainin' all over the world
How many times I've wondered
It still comes out the same
No matter how you look at it, think of it
You just got to do your own thing
I find me a place in a box car
So I take out my guitar to pass some time
Late at night when it's hard to rest
I hold your picture to my chest
And I'm all right
A rainy night in Georgia
A rainy night in Georgia
I believe it's rainin' all over the world
The song "Rainy Night In Georgia" by Nicky Thomas is about a man who is traveling and seeking a place to spend the night. He's alone and it's raining heavily outside. Despite the gloomy weather, he hears a voice - presumably from the persona he misses - telling him everything will be alright. As he wanders around, he notices how the neon signs of taxi cabs and buses are flashing, and how he can hear the distant moaning of a train. He compares the sound of the train to his emotions, as it plays a sad refrain to the night. The persona then remarks on how he has thought about his life several times, but it always ends with the same fact; that he needs to do his own thing. Finally, he finds himself a place in a boxcar, where he takes out his guitar to pass the time. It's late at night, and he's unable to rest; however, somehow he feels comforted by holding a picture of his loved one to his chest.
