I'll Keep It With Mine
Nico Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You will search, babe, at any cost,
But how long, babe, can you search for what's not lost ?
Everybody will help you,
Some people are very kind.
But if I can save you any time,
Come on, give it to me,
I'll keep it with mine.
I can't help it if you might think I am odd
If I say I'm not loving you for what you are
But for what you're not.
Everybody will help you,
Discover what you set out to find
But if I can save you any time,
Come on, give it to me,
I'll keep it with mine.

The train leaves at half past ten
But it'll be back tomorrow same time again.
The conductor, he's weary,
Still stuck on the line.
But if I can save you any time,

Come on, give it to me,
I'll keep it with mine.

Overall Meaning

The song "I'll Keep It With Mine" by Nico is a gentle, yet haunting tune with lyrics that have been interpreted in various ways. The opening lines suggest a search for something or someone with the line, "You will search, babe, at any cost, but how long, babe, can you search for what's not lost?" The following lines indicate that others may be willing to help in the search, but the singer offers to save time and keep any information shared in her confidence.

The second verse adds another layer of complexity to the singer's character, as she implies that she doesn't love the subject for who they are, but rather for who they are not. This suggests that the singer may see potential in the subject, or perhaps sees them through rose-colored glasses. The final verse speaks of a train leaving and returning the next day, with the conductor stuck on the line. The metaphor of the train could signify the passing of time and missed opportunities, and the weary conductor could represent the difficulties that arise when trying to navigate through life.

The lyrics to "I'll Keep It With Mine" have led to much interpretation and speculation among fans and critics alike. Some have suggested that the singer is offering to keep a secret or provide emotional support, while others have viewed the song as an expression of love and devotion. Interestingly, the song was never intended to be sung by Nico - it was actually written by Bob Dylan in the 1960s and he later recorded his own version. Despite this fact, Nico's version has become the more well-known rendition and has been covered by numerous artists over the years.

Nico has the type of voice that is not "trained" or even conventional, but it's that quality itself that attracts me. Beautiful in its own way.

@LaughterMadeFat

Agreed. I feel the same way about Dylan, Waits, and quite a few others.

Nico and Dylan weren’t the most beloved singers but their ability to get so emotion in their voices is astounding Dylan’s version one of the most emotional songs I’ve seen and with emotional delivery too
