Somewhere There's a Feather
Nico Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Love and learn
Take your turn
Somewhere there's a feather
Falling slowly from the sky
You need not know the reason why.

Stand apart
Hear your heart
Someday there will be
Another lover till the end
You need not hold your breath till then.
Don't ask me to explain to you
There's nothing to remain but what we see.

Fall and climb
Take your time
Somehow you must live up
To the precedents you've set
You need not hope for answers yet.
Don't ask me how I know it now
The future does not show itself to me.

So love and learn
Take your turn
Somewhere there's a feather

Falling slowly from the sky
You need not know the reason why.

Overall Meaning

In the song "Somewhere There's a Feather" by Nico, the lyrics are very reflective and introspective in nature. The song starts with the lines "Love and learn, take your turn, somewhere there's a feather falling slowly from the sky, you need not know the reason why." The line "somewhere there's a feather falling from the sky" is symbolic of something small, insignificant, and fleeting that still has meaning. It implies that there is beauty in small things that's often overlooked. The next few lines explore the idea of letting go of control and accepting that there might not always be answers to everything.

The second verse begins with "stand apart, hear your heart, someday there will be another lover till the end, you need not hold your breath till then." This verse urges the listener to follow their own intuition and not to wait for someone who might not show up. The lines "don't ask me to explain to you, there's nothing to remain but what we see" suggest that there are no universal or objective answers to life's questions that we can rely on, rather everything that exists is only what we see in front of us. The song then goes on to discuss that life is full of ups and downs, and we should take our time to overcome obstacles rather than rushing towards the solution.

Overall, the song encourages the listener to embrace the present and accept life as it comes. Rather than trying to solve every problem in the present, sometimes it's okay to allow things to fall into place on their own.

@madisonrhuebaker

I am absolutely falling in love with Nico's voice.

@DivineSinners

One of the most beautiful songs ever.

@alpineinc1

The juxtaposition of a very young Jackson Browne's innocent lyric and beautiful melody, laden with strings, contrasted by Nico's fragile, chilly vocal, trying but failing to be soft and sweet, is where the beauty of this song (and most of the Chelsea Girl LP) lies, especially as Nico in retrospect turned out to be a relatively tragic figure. It's not for all tastes and if it doesn't grab you, fine, but I think for Nico to hit you emotionally you have to have taken a long and varied musical journey, down at least a few dark paths. This song in particular is like an emergence back into the light; like the saddest Sunday morning hangover; like the ugly yearning to be beautiful.

@stumptacular

you know she was tone deaf right? talk about the "x factor"

@DB-bb5ll

Wow, this is the best description I have ever read of any of her songs. Thank you! I'm saving this one.

@tollundman7560

@@stumptacular can you read numb nuts? not everyone in the world has to like someones music for it to be good and LOVED by others.

@FelipeBMota

disagree with the part about her vocal being fragile, but the rest of the text hit me hard, specially the part about u needing to have a certain musical baggage to understand this song as one that makes an effort to be happy and pretty

@gdub999tube

People will always criticize her for singing out of tune, but for reasons that are hard to explain, I think her vocals are beautiful. Maybe those of us who are imperfect can relate to the desire to shine even when the world tells us we are tarnished.
