The Last Mile
Nico Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Rivers were made for flowing
So why not let them flow?
People were made for showing
So why not let them show?

Show a little laughter
Show a little smile
'Cause we've started on the last mile.

Children's minds are crippled
Black is what they see.
Man's mind is murdered
So why not let him see?

Show a little laughter
Show a little smile
'Cause we've started on the last mile.

Children's minds are crippled
Black is what they see.
Man's mind is murdered,
So why not let him see?

Show a little laughter
Show a little smile

'Cause we've started on the last mile

Overall Meaning

The song, The Last Mile by Nico, seems to be an urging to let things flow and show one's true self. The first two lines, "Rivers were made for flowing, So why not let them flow?" could be interpreted to mean that just as rivers are meant to flow naturally, people should also let their thoughts and emotions flow freely. The next two lines, "People were made for showing, So why not let them show?" continue this theme of being true to oneself and not hiding behind societal expectations or norms.

The subsequent lyrics "Show a little laughter, Show a little smile, 'Cause we've started on the last mile" further emphasize the importance of showing one's true, happy self. The expression "the last mile" could indicate that we're at the end, which can be interpreted as a urging to enjoy and savor every moment. It also highlights the idea that we are all on the same journey, we have all come this far, so we should enjoy the remaining journey.

The final four lines, "Children's minds are crippled, Black is what they see, Man's mind is murdered, So why not let him see?" suggest that people today are disillusioned and disheartened with the negative things happening around them. The lines are referring to the unfortunate state of the minds of both children and adults in society. The lyrics of The Last Mile are a reminder to rise above all the negativity, and just like the river, nature is just flowing despite all the pain, we should also go on and show little laughter and smile.
