After releasing their debut EP, ChooseYourWordsPoorly, on their own in early 2006 and establishing themselves as a popular draw on the local concert scene thanks in large part to Volkman's uninhibited and minimally clothed on-stage performance style, Nico Vega signed with MySpace Records, the new recording arm of the popular social networking site, for their second EP, 2007's No Child Left Behind. Their first full-length self titled debut album was released in February of 2009. It featured three songs produced by Linda Perry -- So So Fresh, Wooden Dolls and Gravity - while the rest were produced by Tim Edgar. The album was mixed by Tchad Blake. The band's popularity soared when they performed three songs on Last Call with Carson Daly in 2009.
Nico Vega toured actively in 2009 supporting their first album with acts such as former Bush singer Gavin Rossdale, Semi Precious Weapons, Neon Trees, Manic Street Preachers, and Shiny Toy Guns. In 2010 they toured with The Soundtrack of Our Lives, Metric, Sweethead, Saint Motel, and Imagine Dragons. In 2011 they toured with She Wants Revenge and Blondie. In 2012 they toured with Neon Trees.
The song "Beast" off Nico Vega's first self titled album was featured in a trailer for the video game Bioshock Infinite in October of 2012 creating a renewed interest in the track.
The band's sophomore album, titled We Are The Art, will be out in April of 2013 on Five Seven Music. We Are The Art was recorded in studios around Los Angeles as well as at Sonic Ranch Studios in Texas. It showcases the band's trademark blues-laden guitar rock, with soaring synths thrown in for good measure.
At the end of October 2012, Nico Vega debuted a video of the title track, We Are the Art, on Vice.com. It was written and directed by Daniel Epand, the band's drummer.

I'm on the other side of things
And I can't be laughing when you look at me
'Cause your operating out of jealousy,
Well I'm not gonna hear anything you say,
I'll listen but I won't let it in my way
Up above, I'm looking at the heavy ground
I can feel it, but it wont let it drag me down
But I'll resurrect so NANANANANANA
You're never gonna thrill me,
But you can kiss my ass so NANANANANA
Woahh You're bringing me down.
Pick it up! Pick it up! Pick it up! Pick it up!
Woahh you're bringing me down
Pick it up! pick it up! pick it up!
Gravity is a parallel on words
And overtime it will slowly start to hurt ya
Even though it don't feel like anything
It ain't something you can fix with a diamond ring.
I'm not gonna hear anything you say
I'll listen but I wont let it in my way
Up above I'm looking at the heavy grounds
I can feel it, but it wont let it drag me down.
Over time you can kill me, But I'll resurrect so NANANANANANA
You're never gonna thrill me,
But you can kiss my ass so NANANANANA
Woahh You're bringing me down.
Pick it up! Pick it up! Pick it up! Pick it up!
Woahh you're bringing me down
Pick it up! pick it up! pick it up!
Don't prostitute yourself,
You're selling yourself out,
You're a better man than that
And time, time, time
Woahh you're bringing me down.
Pick it up! Pick it up! Pick it up! Pick it up!
Woahh you're bringing me down
Pick it up! pick it up! pick it up!
The lyrics of Gravity by Nico Vega revolve around the theme of resilience and standing up against negativity. The song starts with the singer saying that he is on the other side of things, implying that he is not affected by the negativity surrounding him. He then goes on to say that the other person's jealousy and unwarranted criticism will not affect him. Despite acknowledging that gravity (which can be interpreted as negativity or life's challenges) can slowly start to hurt, the singer affirms that he will not let it bring him down. He exudes confidence when he says, "Over time you can kill me, but I'll resurrect," showing that he is ready to face whatever challenges that might come his way.
The chorus repeats the phrase "Woahh you're bringing me down" several times, emphasizing the singer's resistance to the negativity surrounding him. He encourages the other person to "Pick it up!" which can be seen as urging them to stop bringing him down or to push themselves to do better rather than being negative.
The song's overall message is one of self-affirmation and strength in the face of negativity. The singer doesn't let the other person's negativity affect him and encourages them to do better rather than bringing him down. It's a powerful message about standing up for oneself and not letting the weight of life's challenges bring one down.

This song was the highlight of their amazing set at the Bluebird Theater last month. Explosive energy. Even hipsters came to life. Nico Vega's shows, songs, and videos are memorable. Oh yeah....tickets to their two CO shows this summer cost a total of $23. Who does that for their fans anymore?!?! Nico Vega....that's who. Just. Keep. Dominating.

Whats awesome about Nico Vega is that they've got like real soul and presence. It's really hard to find music these days with the same amount of weight.
