Biography
A former football player, Nicolai was signed by the Telegram label of Warner records, releasing two albums that did not sell enough copies to enable him to give up his part-time job as a gardener.
A meeting with Ebbot Lundberg of the Swedish band Soundtrack of our Lives led to two further albums, a tour with Emiliana Torrini and the use of one of his songs in an advertisement for an oil company. This small influx of cash enabled the production of a trio of vinyl albums with the Esbjörn Svensson jazz trio.
This steady production of somewhat experimental acoustic music attracted the attention of Americana luminaries Will Oldham and Jonathan Donahue, and a contract with the Dolores Recordings branch of Virgin Records followed. The first album on this label, Soul Rush with backing from the Esbjörn Svensson trio attracted some limited attention in 2001, but the next album, 2003's Tranquil Isolation, achieved widespread, especially thanks to its input from Will Oldham.
A third album, Here's My Song, You Can Have It followed in 2004.
He is currently touring the USA with Mercury Rev.
All the Love
Nicolai Dunger Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
is all outnumbered by the time we began to talk
We can see it come in, we can see it go by
It's all hidden behind our fears
so all the love, all the love we shared is all outnumbered
by the time we meet
when we think of words, is when we don't
comprehend at all
is outnumbered by the time we begin to talk
we can see it come in, we can see it go by
it's hidden behind our fears
so all the days , and all the ways that we hide it
it is so hard to please?
when we think of words, and we don't comprehend at all
is when we think of ways, ways to get closer
to ourselves
all the tears, all the tears that we've shed
is all outnumbered by the time we begin to talk
we can see it come in, we can see it go by
it's hidden behind our fears
all of the days and all of the ways that we hide
it is so hard to please?
when we think of ways, ways to get closer ourselves
is when we think of words and we don't comprehend at all
when we wish and (when) we think of answers
is when we don't comprehend att all
The lyrics to Nicolai Dunger's song "All the Love Days and Tears" seem to be about the difficulties that arise in communication and understanding in a romantic relationship. The repetition of the phrase "all outnumbered by the time we begin to talk" highlights the idea that time, and perhaps the lack of it, is a major factor in the breakdown of this relationship. The verses also suggest that fear plays a role in this breakdown - fear of saying too much or not enough, fear of opening up and being vulnerable, fear of not being understood.
The chorus emphasizes the idea that all the love, all the days spent together, and all the tears shed seem to be outweighed or overshadowed by these communication difficulties and fears. The lines "when we think of words, and we don't comprehend at all" and "when we wish and (when) we think of answers, is when we don't comprehend at all" indicate a frustration with the lack of understanding and connection, and a sense of helplessness in trying to bridge the gap.
Overall, the song seems to be a poignant reflection on the challenges of maintaining a meaningful relationship, particularly in the face of external pressures and internal fears.
