Biography
A former football player, Nicolai was signed by the Telegram label of Warner records, releasing two albums that did not sell enough copies to enable him to give up his part-time job as a gardener.
A meeting with Ebbot Lundberg of the Swedish band Soundtrack of our Lives led to two further albums, a tour with Emiliana Torrini and the use of one of his songs in an advertisement for an oil company. This small influx of cash enabled the production of a trio of vinyl albums with the Esbjörn Svensson jazz trio.
This steady production of somewhat experimental acoustic music attracted the attention of Americana luminaries Will Oldham and Jonathan Donahue, and a contract with the Dolores Recordings branch of Virgin Records followed. The first album on this label, Soul Rush with backing from the Esbjörn Svensson trio attracted some limited attention in 2001, but the next album, 2003's Tranquil Isolation, achieved widespread, especially thanks to its input from Will Oldham.
A third album, Here's My Song, You Can Have It followed in 2004.
He is currently touring the USA with Mercury Rev.
Independence
Nicolai Dunger Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I do what I want and won't feel ashamed.
I wear my head much higher today.
You are here again with that feeling. you are here again.
Independence independence.
You are here again with that feeling. you are here again,
Independence independence.
I take my clothes off and i feel hit, hit by the wind, witch whispers my name..
come closer, closer to me
you are here again with that feeling. you are here again.
Independence Independence
Feelings I get from you... feels like a gift from the birds up in the sky.
The lyrics to Nicolai Dunger's song Independence reflect a newfound sense of self-assurance and confidence. The opening lines "I wear my head much higher today, I do what I want and won't feel ashamed" signify a break from societal or personal expectations that may have previously hindered his sense of freedom. The repetition of "independence" throughout the song emphasizes this theme and the desire to assert one's own will and desires.
The second verse, with the line "I take my clothes off and I feel hit, hit by the wind, which whispers my name" conveys a sense of liberation, as if the singer is able to shed both physical and emotional baggage, and feel a newfound sense of lightness. There is a call to come closer to this feeling of independence and embrace it fully, with the line "come closer, closer to me".
The final line, "Feelings I get from you... feels like a gift from the birds up in the sky" suggests that this newfound independence comes as a gift, but also represents a connection to something greater than oneself. It may be a connection to nature or a spiritual force that imbues the singer with the strength to pursue their own path and live life on their own terms.
