Misrule
Nightbringer Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

He's always known his time's at hand
His rule is someone else's dreaming
Abbot of the Saturnalia

His entourage of imps and satyrs
The lord and lady serve as waiters
Offering curious wines
It's four o'clock and getting on to dark
There's a feast of fools in the back of beyond

Master of life, master of revels
Laughter - the custom at his table
Till thirty days are up

It's four o'clock and getting on to dark
There's a feast of fools in the back of beyond

In the night we exist
Eat, make merry and get pissed

It's four o'clock and getting on to dark
There's a feast of fools in the back of beyond

Overall Meaning

The opening line of Nightbringer's Misrule seems to refer to a king or a ruler who is well aware that his time in power is limited, suggesting that he may be near the end of his reign. However, this ruler is presented as somewhat of an interloper, someone who has taken power that rightfully belongs to another. This thought is reiterated in the following line where the ruler is described as ruling over someone else's dream. The ruler is then introduced as the Abbot of the Saturnalia. The ancient Roman festival of Saturnalia was a time of revelry, feasting, and gift-giving that occurred during mid-December. During this festival, all social norms were turned on their head, and roles were reversed. Masters served their slaves, and slaves became masters. The Abbot of the Saturnalia in Misrule is like the king of this chaotic celebration, leading his entourage of mischievous imps and satyrs through the festivities.

The lord and lady referred to in the song likely serve as the attendants or the hosts of the Abbot's banquet, offering exotic or unusual wines at his table. The song mentions that it's getting dark and that there's a feast happening for fools, which references the themes of the Saturnalia festival. The song's lyrics describe how the Abbot is the master of life and revelry, and his custom is to serve laughter at his table. It is suggested that the festivities will last for the thirty days, with attendees indulging in food and drink, enjoying themselves and living in the moment. The lyrics describe the revelers existing in the night, making merry and being merry, while also hinting at the idea that the madness of the festival only exists within the festival itself.
