Bye Bye Beautiful
Nightwish Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Finally the hills are without eyes
They are tired of painting a dead man's face red
With their own blood

They used to love having so much to lose
Blink your eyes just once and see everything in ruins

Did you ever hear what I told you?
Did you ever read what I wrote you?
Did you ever listen to what we played?
Did you ever let in what the world said?
Did we get this far just to feel your hate?
Did we play to become only pawns in the game?
How blind can you be, don't you see?
You chose the long road but we'll be waiting

Bye bye beautiful
Bye bye beautiful

Jacob's ghost for the girl in white
Blindfold for the blind
Dead siblings walking the dying earth
Noose around a choking heart
Eternity torn apart
Slow toll now the funeral bells

I need to die to feel alive

Did you ever hear what I told you?
Did you ever read what I wrote you?
Did you ever listen to what we played?
Did you ever let in what the world said?
Did we get this far just to feel your hate?
Did we play to become only pawns in the game?
How blind can you be, don't you see?
You chose the long road but we'll be waiting

Bye bye beautiful
Bye bye beautiful
(Bye bye beautiful)
(Bye bye beautiful)

It's not the tree that forsakes the flower
But the flower that forsakes the tree
Someday I'll learn to love these scars
Still fresh from the red-hot blade of your words

(How blind can you be, don't you see?)
(How blind can you be, don't you see?)
(How blind can you be, don't you see?)
(That the gambler lost all he does not have)

Did you ever hear what I told you?
Did you ever read what I wrote you?
Did you ever listen to what we played?
Did you ever let in what the world said?
Did we get this far just to feel your hate?
Did we play to become only pawns in the game?
How blind can you be, don't you see?
You chose the long road but we'll be waiting

Bye bye beautiful
Bye bye beautiful

Bye bye beautiful
Bye bye bye bye

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Bye Bye Beautiful" by Nightwish describe a theme of disillusionment with fame and the music industry. The opening lines suggest a weariness with the violence that comes with success, the "hills," personified as they "tire of painting a dead man's face red with their own blood." This metaphor suggests an exhaustion with the brutality of the music industry, the endless cycle of artists being used up and then discarded.

The singer then questions the listener, asking if they ever truly understood the meaning behind the music, appreciated the lyrics or listened to the band's message. The lines "Did we play to become only pawns in the game?" suggest that the pressures of the industry can dehumanize musicians, leaving them feeling trapped and helpless.

The chorus of "Bye Bye Beautiful" further emphasizes this sense of disillusionment with fame. The band bids farewell to the glittering but unfulfilling world of celebrity, declaring goodbye to an industry that can be soul-destroying for those who participate in it. The repetition of "bye bye beautiful" suggests a mix of sadness and cynicism, bidding farewell to a world that was once alluring but ultimately empty.

Overall, "Bye Bye Beautiful" is a powerful commentary on the darker side of the music industry and the price of fame. It highlights how success can be a facade that ultimately leaves artists feeling frustrated and disillusioned.

Each singer had their own unique voice, Tarja graceful, Anette more mainstream, Floor aggressive, I think what I admire about Nightwish the most, was that Tuomas and the whole band, they didn't try to replicate the same style as the previous singer and tried a new approach. You have to give them credit for that while still making great music, despite it would piss off a number of fans. Tarja songs, Anette songs, Floor songs, I loved them all.

Don't forget Marco.

Tarja 100/10 Anette 10/10 Floor 1/10 There's a clear trend with my all time favorite band. The freefall has been absolutely tragic. Dark Passion Play was the last album from this band as far as I'm concerned. And it was quite magnificent. Everything after that... Diarrhea...

@jakemate33

así es!! lo espléndido de Nightwish es que Tuomas y toda la banda no tratan de replicar el mismo estilo que el cantante anterior...respetan y amplían cada individualidad

@@Thunderhawk51 Tarja 5/10, Anette and Floor 10/10 for my opinion.
