The Crow the Owl and the Dove
Nightwish Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Don't give me love, don't give me faith
Wisdom nor pride, give innocence instead
Don't give me love, I've had my share
Beauty nor rest, give me truth instead

A crow flew to me, kept it's distance
Such a proud creation
I saw it's soul, envied it's pride
But needed nothing it had

An owl came to me, old and wise
Pierced right through my youth
I learned it's ways, envied it's sense
But needed nothing it had

Don't give me love, don't give me faith
Wisdom nor pride, give innocence instead
Don't give me love, I've had my share
Beauty nor rest, give me truth instead

A dove came to me, had no fear
It rested on my arm
I touched it's calm, envied it's love
But needed nothing it had

A swan of white, she came to me
The lake mirrored her beauty sweet
I kissed her neck, adored her grace
But needed nothing she could give

Gar tuht river, Ger te rheged
Gar tuht river, Ger te rheged
Gar tuht river, Ger te rheged

Gar tuht river, Ger te rheged
Gar tuht river, Ger te rheged
Gar tuht river, Ger te rheged

Don't give me love, don't give me faith
Wisdom nor pride, give innocence instead
Don't give me love, I've had my share
Beauty nor rest, give me truth instead

Don't give me love, don't give me faith
Wisdom nor pride, give innocence instead
Don't give me love, I've had my share
Beauty nor rest, give me truth instead

Don't give me love, don't give me faith
Wisdom nor pride, give innocence instead

Don't give me love, I've had my share
Beauty nor rest, give me truth instead

Overall Meaning

The song, The Crow the Owl and the Dove, by Nightwish is a contemplative piece that circles around the themes of love, innocence, wisdom, pride, truth, and beauty. The lyrics revolve around a persona who is reflecting on life, asking that they not be given love, wisdom, pride, and beauty as they have already had an ample share of it, but rather, to be presented with innocence and truth.

The persona seeks to attain something greater than what they're presently experiencing, something that they believe can only be found in the 'truth'. In their quest for this, three creatures come into their life: a crow, an owl, and a dove. These creatures are symbolic, representing different things to the persona. The crow is a proud creation that the persona envies yet realizes they need nothing from it, the owl is an old and wise creature that pierces through their youth and teaches them ways they envy but don't need, and the dove is a representation of love that the persona craves for but doesn't want as they don't need anything from it. The swan is also mentioned, which represents beauty and grace, yet the persona doesn't need anything it has to offer either, highlighting the theme of wanting truth over all.

Overall, the song is about seeking truth over love, wisdom, pride, and beauty and acknowledges the unnecessary desire for them. The themes are reinforced with metaphors, and the overall tone is introspective.

"A parrot came to me, chattering,
And bit me till I bled.
I threw a rock and cussed like a sailor
But needed nothing it had.

A chicken waddled to me, warbling,
Expecting to be fed,
She ate my corn and left an egg,
But...actually, I do need eggs. Thanks, Chicky!

An ostrich gray, he came to me,
He kicked me hard, right in the meat!
I came to rest a few yards back,
And I sure as Hell did not need that!"

...something like that. >_<

I think Marco's softer stuff is way underrated. Songs like this one, or The Islander, are masterfully crafted. I love the folky influences in these songs

@FAIRGROUNDFUNFAIRSUK

The islander what a song one of my nightwish favourites by far

@gpaul856

Why do people want to criticize Anette? Comparing her to Tarja or Floor is unfair. She is her own person. She is not Tarja or Floor. She helped Nightwish give us great songs like this one! This is one of my favourite songs by the band.

@MissFifyDevil

George Maines Couldn't agree with you more.

Blackveilhotel I think Anette would have sounded great on the new record. There is only one song that might have given her trouble. I think 'Our Decades in the Sun' would have been hard for her to sing (as well as Floor did), but I can't hear Floor or Tarja singing 'Slow Love Slow' as well as Anette.

@MissFifyDevil

I agree with you once more, but I do think Anette could sing the song 'Our Decades in the Sun' if there were some changes and if she would sing it slightly lower. But Floor did an amazing job on that song, she did an amazing job on the entire record. And Anette was great on Dark Passion Play and an AMAZING job on Imaginaerum. They are all great singers in their own way. I do miss Anette , but I think Floor will grow on me, just as Anette did back then.

Blackveilhotel That's cool! We both hate to see the singers of Nightwish compared to each other. It makes no sense to do that. They are different people with different voices. We're all different! None of us are exactly the same.

@MissFifyDevil

Indeed! We should all just appreciate all the band members and ex-members as well. They all do and did great jobs. I mean that's what we are here for right? To listen to the beautiful music they have created together!

Amazing how the guy known as the "metalhead" of the band is behind this beautiful, peaceful music.

@metalsnailptv1151

being a metalhead doesnt mean that you love only love metal. metalheads can listen to pop, rap or dubstep, but thats quite rare. im speaking as a metalhead myself, and i like this kind of music and still... its called symphonic metal, isnt it? :)
