The Fox
Niki & the Dove Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Whenever she is weary
She climbs uphill
And crosses a dark trail
And there she finds the fox in the wooden glade
She lies by a rock and she's red
She smells of violets and ?
She flicks her ears
As I whisper

I've grown a handsome tall tree, mother
And I want to bear a fruit for you
And I've carried your fears and your hopes, father
They're so heavy on my back, oh you should know

Catch some sleep

I wanna find the eagle's nest
Oh take me with you (oh, oh)
Oh, and I've been waiting a lifetime for this
And I am ready (oh, oh)
Oh, best believe me I've been up all night
They call me crazy (ooh, ooh)
But I wanna see what the sky looks like
From your view (uh oh, uh oh, whoa)

But I saw
Your face carved in clay
And I saw (she saw)
It outlined against a purple sky
It goes loud and deep in me
Loud and deep
My home
Is on that cliff

I wanna find the eagle's nest
Oh take me with you (oh, oh)
Oh, I've been waiting a lifetime for this
And I am ready (uh oh, uh oh)
Whoa, forever wanderer, I wandered all my life
They never knew me (no, no)
Oh, I wanna see what the sky looks like
From your view (uh oh, uh oh, whoa)

I've grown a handsome tall tree, mother
And I want to bear a fruit for you
And I've carried your fears and your hopes, father
I'll conquer them for me and you
I've grown a handsome tall tree (oh)
And I want to bear a fruit for you
And I've carried your fears and your hopes, father
I will conquer them for me and you

I've grown a handsome tall tree

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Niki & the Dove's song "The Fox" evoke a sense of journey and transformation. The singer, who appears to be seeking guidance or enlightenment, climbs uphill and crosses a dark trail to find a fox in a wooden glade. The fox seems to have a mysterious, otherworldly quality, as it "smells of violets and" something that is left unsaid. The singer speaks to the fox, telling it about the tree they have grown and their desire to bear fruit for their mother. They also mention carrying their father's fears and hopes, which they feel are heavy on their back.

The chorus of the song expresses the singer's longing to find an eagle's nest and see the sky from its perspective. They feel they have been waiting a lifetime for this experience, and are willing to go to great lengths to achieve it. They acknowledge that others may see them as crazy for their dream, but this does not deter them. The bridge of the song describes a vision the singer has of their home being on a cliff, and seeing their face outlined against a purple sky. The final verse repeats the earlier themes of the tree the singer has grown and their desire to conquer their fears and hopes for themself and their family.

This is so amazingly incredible. One of the most creative, expressive, powerful songs I've ever heard.

I remember watching this video before school every morning amazed at the art & how beautiful the song goes with it.. one of the very few videos I admired as a child 😩💛

@syscotron

I directed/animated this video back in 2011, it's so cool to hear that it had an impression on you like that! It's definitely my favorite project of my career.

@GorillaPHX

This song is one of those songs that hits you directly in the heart, so much so that something in you changes. No need for deep explanations, for those this has happened to, they will understand. As far as the video is concerned, I think its absolutely fantastic, right imagery, just enough suggestion to allow the viewer to interpret what they will from it without the trappings of some gaudy over produced piece of non-sense spoon feeding meaning. Its perfect.

@bigbigman3

This song is sublime! Its the kind of song you listen to late at night with a glass of wine!

@zazmatyk

@anubis520

"i've grown a handsome, tall tree mother, and I want to bear a fruit, for you. and ive carried your fears and your hopes, father, they're so heavy on my back, oh you should know!" that part is just so damn good

@BenyBenator

I'm amazed by that song. I've been listening to nothing but this since yesterday. It's so charged with energy, and the emotion in her voice is giving me the chills.

@atilinha234

Eu amo essa música num nível tão absurdo
É simplesmente uma experiência mágica ouvir ela, todas as vezes

@peterthepersonalstylist

all the album is worth buying.....they are like Kate Bush, Cyndi Lauper, Stevie Nicks all scramble into one but equally 'original' in their own right. There is nobody like Niki&The Dove and I LOVE THEM. LOVE THEM. THE ALBUM IS CLASSIC TO ME ALREADY. BUY THE DAMN THANG.
