No me toque
No me rompa el corazon
Ay mima no
No me rompa
No me rompa el corazon
Ay mima no
Awaniye, awaniye, awaniye
Ay madre no
No me toque ahi
Que me impone
Que me exige el corazon
Ay madre no
No me toque ahi
No me rompa el corazon
Ay madre no
Ay madre no
No me rompa
El corazon, corazon, corazon
The song "Mama's Chant" by Nil Lara is a beautiful fusion of Spanish and English lyrics. It speaks to the relationship between a mother and a child, where a child asks for their mother to not break their heart. The song is an emotional plea for a mother to understand the delicate nature of love and relationships. The repetition of "Ay mima no" and "Ay madre no" emphasizes the desire for the mother to listen to their child's needs and not impose her own.
The opening lines "No me toque, no me rompa el corazón" can be interpreted as a request for the mother to not physically harm or emotionally damage the child. The use of the word "rompa" (break) highlights the vulnerability of the child's heart and how easily it can be shattered. The child is asking for understanding and compassion from the mother, while also acknowledging the need for a protective boundary.
The chorus, "Awaniye, awaniye, awaniye" is a repetition of a Spanish word that does not have a direct English translation. It is believed to be a word from the Native American Arawak language, which Lara may have learned growing up in the Dominican Republic. This repetition adds a mystical quality to the song, emphasizing the importance and power of the mother and child bond.
Overall, "Mama's Chant" is a moving song that speaks to the universal desire for love, understanding, and protection within a mother and child relationship.
