Morning Light
Nils Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
We know I won't last forever.
Wear it out while it feels right
We know that it's now or never.
Meet me in the sky tonight
We could fly away together.
Maybe if we try it right
The opening lines, "Meet me in the morning light, we know I won't last forever" suggest that the singer is fully aware of their own transience or of a situation's impermanence. It's almost as though they're pleading with someone to seize the moment before time runs out. The use of first-person plural pronoun "we" in the line "Wear it out while it feels right, we know that it's now or never" seems to indicate that the singer is speaking to a partner or a lover, and hinting that they may not have much time to spend together. It's as though the singer is urging themselves and their partner to make the most of their time together, regardless of whatever comes next.
The second verse, "Meet me in the sky tonight, we could fly away together. Maybe if we try it right, we could make our love forever" despite being more optimistic, is still strongly grounded in the idea of impermanence. The song seems to be about two people who are trying to make the most of a fleeting moment because they know that nothing is guaranteed. Nils's soothing vocals and the gently flowing melody are wistful yet hopeful, reflecting the bittersweet nature of the lyrics. This is a song that can be interpreted in many ways, but what is clear is that it is about someone making the most of the time they have with someone they love.
